もともと名詞で正しい文を無理やり動詞として分詞や不定詞にして考える意味はないと思います。 そもそも、動詞として、ride は「乗り物に乗る」というのが基本で、 乗り物である train が主語というのはあまりありません。 ゼロとは言いません。 でも、普通には人が乗り物に乗る、普通に考えることです。 乗り物が主語になる自動詞用法がゼロではありませんが、 普通に考えればいいです。 That the train rode ～ The train which rode ～ のように、train が ride の主語になるというのはまれ。 riding は分詞でなく、動名詞の余地があるので可能かもしれません。 とにかく、普通に名詞で説明でき、もともと名詞で成り立っている、 ということです。
