わからない構文があります
About 15 years ago, two South African engineers were watching village women carrying water. They said to themselves:"There just has to be a better way!" Being engineers, they thought of systems of electrical pumps and pipes and plumbing. There just has to be a better way!と Being engineersの構文がわかりません どなたか教えていただけないでしょうか?

There just has to be a better way!" いわゆる there is 構文です。 has to で「…しなければならない」ですが、be が続きますので「…がなければならない」 少し変化させて「…が欲しいなぁ」「…がないかなぁ」のようにしてみます。 なぜそんな変化をさせるかと言えば、前後の話の流れからです。 Being は「…なので」などにします。分詞構文は、主語と接続詞が省略された構文ですので、あまり意味の強い言葉でつなげる必要はありません。 "There just has to be a better way!" もっと良い方法がないかなぁ…。 Being engineers, they thought of systems of electrical pumps and pipes and plumbing. エンジニアなので、彼らは電動ポンプや…を考えだした。

There is a better way. で「もっとよいやり方がある」 この is という述語の部分に have to 原形が入り込んでいます。 本来、「～しなければならない」の意味ですが、今では must と同様、「～に違いない」 の意味でも使います。 a better way が単数だから、is であるように、 has to となって、to の後だから is は原形 be となります。 こういう場合は助動詞的に there /has to/ be a ～と考えればいいです。 have to はもともと助動詞っぽいですが、seem to なんかでも同じです。 there seems to be a ～. 最後の単数に縛られて、has/seems が決まる、というのが最初はわかりにくいかもしれません。 「もっといいやり方があるに違いない」 Being engineers というのはちょっと固い英語で、高校英語の分詞構文でよく出るパターン。 Because they were engineers「彼らはエンジニアなので」 の意味になります。
