英訳、お手上げです
アメリカ人の大学生からメールが来たのですが半分以上わかりません。 どなたか助けていだだけないでしょうか。 何のためにこのメールを沢山の人に送ったのかも不明です。 Subject 「A Scottish Friendship Wish」 なぜか本文がなくて最後にシグネチャ。 これはwebでコミックを書いている人のコメントの引用だと思います。 "Creativity isn't a faucet that you can turn on and off, it's more like a horrid old lawnmower that you have to coax and yank into shape, coupled with prayers and a little 10W40 spritzed into the joints." 物を作り出す才能というものはオン/オフできる蛇口のような物じゃない。 それは、う～～ん、恐ろしく古い芝刈り機（ちゃんと使うためにうまいこと操縦しなくちゃいけない芝刈り機？何のこっちゃ） で、次が全くわかりません。 「10W40」というのは「leet」を「１３３t」と書くようなものだとは思うのですが、「low...何？？」 どなたかおわかりになる方宜しくお願いいたします。

「想像力とは蛇口のように開けたり閉めたりするものではない。それよりも祈りながらオイルをスプレイして、なだめなだめ無理やり引っ張っていかなきゃならないようなおんぼろの芝刈り機みたいな物なのだ。」 10Ｗ40はオイルの事（英国では多分ＷＤ40と言うところですが）、おんぼろの芝刈り機を使った事がなければわからないかもしれませんが、まずスタートさせるのがとても大変、動いたとしても途中で止まったりちゃんと芝を刈ってくれなかったりするのです。 コミックを書いている人の引用という事ですので、「どうやって次々アイディアが浮かぶの？」「いつも新しいアイディアがぽんと頭の中に来るの？」などと訊かれたのかもしれませんね。タイトルに関しては…そのお友達が何かスコットランドに由来する人なのかもしれませんがこれはわかりません。何故沢山の人に送ったのか、ですがこれはいい引用だと思ったからではないでしょうか？という単純な答えになってしまいますが…。

補足読みました。 "coax and yank into shape" 止まらないように気をつけて、でもちょっと乱暴にして動くようにするって意味だと思うんですが…。何か機械が動かないとバシッと叩いたりしません？（私はやります）この場合の"shape"は"good condition"または"healthy"と同じだと考えればわかるでしょうか。この使い方は、 He was in great shape. = He was very well. I have to get into shape. = I have to get fit. "coupled with prayers" 私の個人的な訳し方なので正しいとは限りませんが、日本語らしく訳すという意味でそのようにしてみました。"coupled with"は"combined with"として考え、「祈りと共に」が直訳になります。オイルだけでは動かないかもしれないので神頼りもしなくちゃいけない、という意味だと思います。これは「想像力・創作心」との比喩だという事を忘れなければわかりやすいと思います。 「それよりも」 これは"it's more like..."から「～というよりもｘｘなんだよ」という意味でこれも日本語らしくしてみたんです。「開けたり閉めたりする蛇口というよりも、……芝刈り機みたいなものなんだ」と続けて訳してもいいと思います。「というよりも」でも良かったですね。 ついでに10Ｗ40ですが、実際にその商品を使う可能性は高く、またはそれに似た商品ということなので本当はそのまま書いた方が良かったかもしれません。ただ日本人には馴染みのない商品名を書いてもまだ意味不明のままなので「オイル」と訳しました。「フーヴァー(hoover)して」と言っても無意味なので「掃除機かけて」というのと同じだと思います。 訳の仕方は個人それぞれですが…私は自然な日本語にしたつもりでしたがちゃんと直訳も書けば良かったですね、ごめんなさい。長々と失礼しました。

こんにちは。分かる部分だけ。 10W40は、日本で言うクレ556みたいな、つまり潤滑用のオイルスプレーの商品名です。 これだけでももう少し読めてきそうですね。お役に立てればいいのですが。

Pippin様にはいつも助けていただいています。 開けたり閉めたり、無理やり引っ張っていく、おんぼろ、いい日本語がたくさんありましたね。こんな風に訳していただくととても安心します。そしてこの人の言っているのはなかなか含蓄のある言葉だと思います。10Ｗ40はオイルの事なんですねえ。ブランド名が商品全体を指すことがよくありますね。なるほど。どうもありがとうございます。 ところで「into shape」ってどういう意味か、「coupled with prayers」というところがどうして「祈りながら」なのか、どうして「それよりも」になるのか、これからのために少しおしえていただけないでしょうか。5月22日20:04
