＃２です。辞書での言葉の説明の順番は、言うまでもなくその言葉がその意味で使われる頻度の順番だと思います。decentの場合は先ずは『３．そこそこ良い』があり次に『4.かなり良い』がきます。このような場合どちらの意味にとるかは文脈から判断しますが、貴方のような例文では文脈からではどちらともいえません。その場合は、より一般的にはどちらの意味だろうかを考えます。 decentと多少似通ったratherと単語がありますが、英辞郎のrather（副詞）には1. かなり、だいぶ、ずいぶん・・・ ２．いくぶん、やや、多少・・・・と解説があります。これについても同じことが言えると思います。 On a closing note, 貴方の例文は技術書の引用のようですが、私自身も技術者です。基本的に技術書では読者の誤解をなくすよう、主観的な、ある意味あいまいなdecentのような言葉は出来るだけ避けるべきです。

decentではやはり『そこそこの』『まあまあの』ぐらいで『かなり』まではいかないでしょう。

回答ありがとうございます。 alcにてdecentを調べますと ( http://eow.alc.co.jp/search?q=decent&ref=sa ) 3. [質や量が]結構[そこそこ]良い[多い] 4. [質が]非常に優れた、かなり良い との記載がありました。 「そこそこ良い」と「かなり良い」の程度の違う２つの意味が載っており、どうもよく理解できていません。

Some tea was left in the pot. とほぼ同じ意味とされていますが、その使い分けがよくわかりません。 何冊かの参考書を読み比べましたが、 Thereで始まる文は、唐突な感じを避ける事ができる。 Thereで始まる文は、主語を強調している。 という解説のみで、日本語を訳し分ける必要はないらしいのですが、 あえてその違いがわかるように訳すとしたら、どんな訳が考えられるでしょう。また、使われる文脈、状況の違いなどを教えていただけないでしょうか。
