もともと、parallel は「平行の」という形容詞で、「類似した」という意味にもなりますが、 ここでは there are の後で、複数になっているように、「類似点」という名詞です。 close parallels to ～「～と密接な類似点（がある）」 英語では「～に対して」という to になります。 precede というのはおっしゃるように「～より先に来る」という意味で、follow の反対です。 ここではそういう映画つくりの過程というのでなく、歴史的に映画という近代的なものより前に存在する。 ずばり、poetry or novel writing「詩歌や小説を書くこと」が そういう先に存在する芸術形態なわけです。
