補足、承りました。#1です。 >『反体制派が過激派に支配されるという恐怖を思うがあまり結局そういうことになってしまった』 大変適した訳の一つかと思います。自己実現的予言とは、まさにそういうことですので。self-fulfilling prophecyは意味が伝わりにくい（自己実現といった訳からは別のニュアンスを受け取る恐れもある）ということで、訳を説明にするのはいい手かと思います。 >ほかに良い訳し方ありますでしょうか？ 意図がうまく伝わればいいわけで、この場合は「皮肉にも裏目に」といったニュアンスが出ていればいいのではないかと思います。 「反体制派に過激派が台頭するのを恐れるあまり、かえって過激派を招き入れる結果となった。」 その他、the oppositionを反体制派だけでなく、アサド政権をも意識した訳も間違いにはならないように思います。それには「反体制派」を「敵」といった訳語に変えればいいかと思います。 「敵が過激になってしまったのは、過激化を嫌悪するそぶりがあからさまだったからだ。」

お世話になっております。 以下についてお教え頂けないでしょうか。 They anticipated that there would be trouble.＝It was anticipated that there would be trouble. 上記のように辞書に書かれていました。 右側の文、すなわちwas anticipated と受け身にした時の文がどうもわかりません。 (1)It was anticipated by them that there would be trouble. とby themが省略されているのでしょうか？ (2)was anticipated と受け身になっているのにthat there would be trouble.という目的節が どうして来るのでしょうか？他動詞がなければthat there would be trouble.を目的節として取れないと思います。 ご指導のほど何卒宜しくお願い申し上げます。
