この文は、faith 「信念」と courage 「勇気」は両方要る、という論ですから、「思念」はともすればないことがあるが「勇気」だけでは、生き延びられない（＝「信念」が要る）。ということでしょう。 ですから it は、「信念」でない方、すなわち courage を指すと思います。第２文の訳は 「勇気はあっても、よくあるように、信念がなければ、それ（＝勇気）は災害を生き延びることは出来ない（＝災害に遭うと信念のない勇気は無くなってしまう）」 では無いでしょうか。
