この場合のamongとは
以下の文章の"among"の意味がわからないのですが、 これがないと文章は成り立たないのでしょうか？ infants are able to discriminate among even subtle differences in smells. 新生児は、かすかなにおいの違いをも弁別することができる。

discriminateを自動詞として意識して使った場合の例文ですね。ですので弁別するのが二つだとbetweenで、三つ以上だとamongということです。会話ではこれに限らず、三つ以上でもbetweenと言うことはよくあります。 このままで、amongを取り去ると他動詞のdiscriminateで、これも何ら、意味的に差異はありません。 私個人の感覚では、重複する感じなどの他の要素がない限り、単刀直入に短く言いたいことが多いので、among無しのほうで言うだろうな、と思います。まあ、そういう好みの人間もいるという、ご参考になればと。

It is this and similar differences which make it possible to say that the inhabitants of the United States are in general racially distinct from the inhabitants of Mexico. この文章の It is this and similar differences which make it possible to say that the inhabitants of the United States are in general racially distinct from the inhabitants of Mexico. の文ですが、 this and similar differences の箇所ですが、 私はthisを代名詞と判断したのですが、 参考書には 「thisは単数形の、theseは複数形の名詞にかかるのが約束ですから、this differences とは言えませんが、ここはsimilarによって、「これと同種の〈相違〉」が追加されていますから複数形でよいのです。」 とあります。 そうなると this (differences) and similar differences という解釈をするのでしょうか。 しかし、 this similar differences であれば similar(同種の) がthisとdifferencesの間にあるから、分かるのですが、 this differences だけでは（同種の）という意味は追加されていないのではないでしょうか。
