GWアソシエイツは先ごろ、無料ホットラインを開設し、顧客はそれを通じて1日24時間 技術支援を受けることができる。 (A) which (B) by that (C) through which (D) then 答えは(C) なのですが、なぜ(A)の whichだけでは間違いなのでしょうか？？ あと (B)のby that でも【それによって】みたいな意味合いで合ってるかと思ってしまいます。 どなたか(A) (B) が違う理由を教えていただけないでしょうか？？

(2) And through it (= the toll-free hotline) customers can obtain technical assistance 24 hours a day. この、through it あるいは through the toll-free hotline が、through which に置き換わる（which = and it) 訳ですから、which 単独では意味が通じなくなります。 また、by that の that を関係代名詞とすれば、関係代名詞の that にはその前に前置詞を置く用法はありませんし、コンマによって、付加的な説明を付け加える継続用法（非制限用法）も、that にはありませんから無理です。 that を指示代名詞と考えた場合は、文と文をつなぐ接続詞 and が必要になります。だから、指示代名詞の that と考えて by that とする案もダメになります。 答えは (C) through which になります。

which だけだと which 以下の節において which は主格か目的格という議論になります。どちらも無理があります。例えば次の customers が主語であると認めると、目的語が which と technical assistance の２つもあるような混乱状態に陥ります。through which (副節) とすれば何の問題も起きません（前置詞が through がよいのか、他の例えば by が良いのかと言った議論は別途として)。which が主格とすると次の customers と２つの主語があるという混乱状態に陥ります。 by that でも良いのではないかという疑問の方はもっともです。やや高度な疑問です。which を使った場合は which=toll-free hotline と狭く解釈します。that が問題がある理由は少しややこしいのですが、(1) 関係代名詞の that は限定用法なのでカンマ付きの副節では関係代名詞としては用いられない、(1) that が前文全体を受けるニュアンスなら構わないが (関係代名詞ではなくなる)、that=「ホットラインを設けたこと」となり、文意が少しずれる、という理由が考えられます。 時間がないので急ぎました。疑問があれば言って下さい。

＃１です。補足です。 through と by の違いは、熟語的なものだ、と申し上げましたが、下記のような例がご参考になるかと思います。 establish a connection through telephone lines 電話回線を使って接続を確立する http://eow.alc.co.jp/through+a+line/UTF-8/ ところが「電話で」だと下記のように by になります。 http://eow.alc.co.jp/by+telephone/UTF-8/ と言うことは電話が使われると言うことで決まるのではなく、前文の a toll-free hotline の line で前置詞が決まっていると言うことです。

括弧の前を前文とします。 問題は前文の最後の「無料ホットライン」ですね。後文は「顧客」が主語、動詞は「～を得られる」という他動詞、目的語は「一日24時間の技術援助」です。 （A）ですと、「無料ホットライン」が他動詞の直接目的となり、「顧客が無料ホットラインを得られる」となってしまいます。そうするとほんとうの目的語「一日24時間の技術援助」が宙に浮きます。 （B）ですと、through 対 by の、どちらが obtain に適した前置詞句であるか問題になり、through が普通の言い方です。
