英文の意味
He stood quite still in the dark so as not to be noticed. この文章の訳として、 彼は気付かれないように暗いところにじっと立っていた。 と、なっています。 He stoodだけなら、彼は立ったという訳になると思うので、多分quiteが影響しているのかなと思ったのですが、ここでのquiteはどういう意味で使われているのでしょうか？ もしくは、still in the darkは、暗い場所にいる間という訳になると思うので、この部分があるから、立っていたという訳になっているのでしょうか？ ただ、このようにするなら、had stoodのようになる気もするのですが何故had stoodではないのでしょうか？

still は stand にかかっている副詞で、「動かず、静かに」と言う意味です。 He stood still. 彼は静かに立っていた。 quite は still にかかっている副詞で、「全く、完全に」と言う意味です。 He stood quite still. 彼は全く動かずに立っていた。 had stood の様な過去完了形は、それ単独では使いません。別に過去形の文があり、それより更に過去の事を表す時に使います。 例えば、 When I entered the room, he had already slept. 私が部屋に入った時、彼は既に寝ていた。 私が部屋に入ったという過去よりも更に過去に彼は寝たので、過去完了を使うのです。

日本語の訂正です。 『不動だにせず』ではなくて『微動だにせず』のタイプミスでです。

（１） イギリス英語の辞典ロングマンが stand の第１義としてあげているのは to support yourself on your feet or be in an upright position:という「状態」の意味で、下記にあります。 http://www.ldoceonline.com/dictionary/stand_1 これがこの文での意味ですから、訳が正しいと思います。 （２） quite は still を修飾していますから、「全く静かに」です。 （３） 立っている、という「状態」でなく、立ち上がる、という「動作］の場合には stand up というのが普通で、そうなれば had stood などの心配も必要になるかも知れません。

この quite は still を強めています。 still は静かに、そのままの状態で、と言う意味です。 これに stood と『まったく動かないで』『不動だにせず』 『息を潜めて』という意味になります stand は日本語では『立っている」に相当します。 英語では、建物や木が立っている時は stand A beautiful house stands near my house. 一時的に『立っている』場合は、be standing を使います A policeman is standing in front of the police box. 交番の前に警察が立っている。 He stood quite still から一時的でない、固まった感じがよく伝わってきます。気づかれないように『息をひそめていた』がよく表れいます。

イギリス英語でしょうか。 standは状態動詞だと思います。 つまりそれだけで、”（人が、物が）たっている”という意味になると思います。stoodならもちろん”たっていた”。 quite=completely, absolutely. still=not moving つまりquiteは形容詞であるstillを強調している副詞 だから訳でも”じっと”となっているのだと思います。 日本語に訳すと had stood、stoodのどちらも”立っていた”という訳になるような気が 気がします、ただ前者のほうが後者より時制が前であるということだと 思います。 専門家ではないので、参考程度に。

直訳だと、彼は「かなり」暗い中で立っていた。。。誰も気づかないように。 となりますね。 quiteは暗さを強調しています。 still in the darkは、暗い場所にいる間という訳になると思うので...とありますが、それは少し違うと思います。 光のない「暗さ」の中にいた、と言うことですから、わざわざ完了形にする必要はありません。 むしろその時だけを強調するのであれば、 He was standing quite still in the dark so as not to be noticed. の方が自然だと思います。
補足
解答有り難うございます。 ただ、他の人のを読んでみたところ、quiteはstillを修飾しているようですし、そのほうがしっくり来るようですね。
