Zeus, the Almighty: Unleashing Power and Justice

  • Zeus, the mighty thunderer, holds dominion over both the strong and the humble. He easily empowers the weak and brings down the mighty, humbles the proud and raises the obscured, and straightens the crooked with a single gust of wind.
  • In this passage from 'Theogony' by Hesiod, Zeus' power and justice are emphasized. He has the ability to make the weak strong and the strong low, to humble the proud and elevate the obscure. With ease, he can straighten what is crooked and blast away the arrogance of the proud.
  • This excerpt from the Matsudaira Chiaki translation of 'Theogony' captures the essence of Zeus' power and justice. He effortlessly bestows strength upon the weak, humbles the arrogant, and raises the lowly. With a single gust of wind, he can straighten the twisted and shake the foundations of pride.

(229)For easily ……

QA229 For easily he makes strong, and easily he brings the strong man low; easily he humbles the proud and raises the obscure, and easily he straightens the crooked and blasts the proud,—Zeus who thunders aloft and has his dwelling most high. Attend thou with eye and ear, and make judgements straight with righteousness. And I, Perses, would tell of true things. And I, Perses, would tell of true thingsについて ‘Perses’は倒置と考えて And I would tell of true things (to) Perses. toが必要でしょうか。

And I, Perses, would tell of true things. Attend thou with eye and ear, and make judgements straight with righteousness.

(ただし、Verseではなく、proseの場合です) (1)easily he humbles the proud and raises the obscureについて このobscureは’あいまいにする’ではなく、’目立たなくする’ この意味であることが気づきました。 (2) Attend thou with eye and earについて この文の前2行 雷を落とし給うゼウス、(aloft) 天上の高嶺にお住まいを持ち給う御方は このように、眼と耳をもって加わり 正義をもって正しい判断をされ給え。

The attack was almost unopposed and by 7:00 a.m. the South Africans had captured the wood south of Prince's Street, despite the wreckage of fallen and uprooted trees. Tanner sent two companies to secure the northern perimeter of the wood and later, the 3rd Battalion advanced to the east and north-east. By 2:40 a.m., the wood was occupied, except for a German strong point in the north-western corner, adjoining Longueval. The South Africans began to dig in around the fringe of the wood in groups, forming strong–points supported by machine-guns, in a salient and in touch with the 26th Brigade only along the south-western edge of the wood next to Longueval. The troops had spades but roots and remnants of tree trunks made it possible only to dig shallow shell scrapes before German troops counter-attacked.
