「この城の建設期間は三世紀にわたり、おそらく史上最大の建築計画であった。」 だと思うのですが、どの城のことでしょう？ 一つの城のことと考えたのは、construction projectが単数だからです。質問者様のように「城を建築する時代」と考えてしまうと、いくつもの建築計画が存在しなければなりません。

"perhaps"のニュアンスの訳が抜けていますね。この言葉によって筆者は断定を避けています。 "greatest"が「素晴らしい」とは限りません。やはり普通に「偉大な」が相応しいと思います。なぜなら、「偉大な」であれば、「充実した」、「発展した」などの意味が感じられますが、「素晴らしい」だと見た目の美しさだけに受け取られかねないからです。 原文のまま引用されたとしたら妙なのは、"3 centuries"です。正しい英作文ではこうは書きません。数字が一文字の場合、"three"と書くのがルールとされています。
