I'll call upon professor Brown to do... 「ブラン教授に頼みます。」 call uponをオックスフォード現代英英辞典で調べると 1. to formally invite or ask sb to speak 2. to ask or demand that sb do sth とありました。 2の説明から、上記の例文は I'll ask professor Brown to do... と置き換えても意味的には変わらないと考えていいのでしょうか?

- "berth"の慣用句ですが・・
wideを辞書で引いたときにある、"give a wide berth to sb"という慣用句で、意味は"to avoid sb or sth"と書いてあり、例文も載っているのですが、例文を見ても、いまいち、というかさっぱり意味がつかめません。この慣用句の使い方及び意味を教えてくださいませんか？

次の文でお聞きしたいのですが、 His father said that it would behoove him to observe moderation in all things.では、obeserveとmoderationの意味がはっきりしないのです。 observeの意味は、1 to see or notice sb/sth 2to watch sb/sth careflly 3 to make a remarkですがどれもあてはまらい気がしてしまうのです。moderationはavoiding excess, balance, constraintなどと思うのですが。

- likeの用法について（「知っている」？「知る」？）
likeという単語は「知っている」というように完全に「状態」を表すのみの動詞だと思っていたのですが、OALDでknowを引くと 2) to realize, understand or be aware of sth: というふうに、『知る（気づく、理解する）』のような「動作的」な意味が２番目に載っていました。そして、その用法の例文で 1.I knew perfectly well what she meant. 2.She knew she was dying. という文が載っていました。 「知る」で訳すとすれば、「彼の言いたいことを完全に理解した」「（彼女は）彼女が瀕死だと知った」と訳せると思うのですが、 「彼の言いたいことを完全に知っていた」「彼女が瀕死だと知っていた」のようにも訳せるような気がします。 この「知っている」or「知る」の使い分けは、文脈で見分けるしかないのでしょうか？ また、英和辞典には「知る」という用法が載っていないのですが、なぜなのでしょうか。「見分ける」（またその意味での「わかる」など）は載っているのですが・・・

一、Osaka Municipal Government は具体的にどのような訳（府？？市？？）になるでしょうか？ また、Municipalを使わずに表現できますか？ 一、commissionについて 英英辞典の説明が an extra amount of money that is paid to a person or organization according to the value of the goods or the services they've provided. となっていましたが、これは日本語で一言で表現すると何になりますか？ extra（余分な）とあるから賄賂かとおもいましたが、もしかして報奨金とかかなとも思いました。 一、Chief Cabinet Secretaryとはズバリなんですか？原発云々の英字新聞に出てきました。

ご回答ありがとうございました。 確かに、「assessは単に現象を客観的に調べて良い悪いに関係なく判断すること」「evaluateは、有用性の観点に主眼を置いているイメージがあります。」というご意見が参考になります。 皆さんのご回答で、（間違っているかもしれませんが）次第に両者の差の イメージを抱くようになりました。とりあえず、 ASSESSMENT --- 多分に客観的な調査の意味を含む、判断 EVALUATION --- （ASSESSMENTを前提・参考とすることもある）、 判断する者にとって直接的・間接的な有用性を基準とし た判断 という感覚的な違いに思えます。
