That's the way it is などと近い表現だと思います。 直訳は難しく 「そのアパートがそのようににおうのは当然のことだ」 「そのアパートはそのように匂う」 という感じ。 The apartment smelled the way だけならだめで the way (that..) のように way がどういう way なのかが必要。 smelled of them は文法的には問題ないですが、前文とおなじことを代名詞出を使って繰り返していることなのでスタイリッシュではないです。

こんにちは、 今回も、Louis Sacharの『HOLES』からです。 chapter47の中の以下の文に関してです。 "The last Stanley saw of it was one hairy leg sticking out of the lizard's mouth." において、"saw of"となるのは、なぜでしょうか？ 日本語訳としては 「Stanleyが見た最後のものは、トカゲの口から突き出た一本の毛もじゃの足であった。」 となるのかなとなんとなくわかるのですが、 "The last Stanley saw of it" の部分が解釈しにくいです。 "The last thing which Stanley saw" のことかな、と思ったりするのですが、 "saw of it"？？ と困ってしまいます。 "The last Stanley saw of it"の部分の解釈、特に"saw of it"の部分について教えてください。 参考までに、上記の文の直前の分を以下に示します。 "Stanley suddenly felt a sharp sting on the side of his neck. The lizard hadn't bitten him, however. It was merely pushing off." よろしくお願いします。
