日本の大学へ入学する生徒の人数が減っているという記事の中で The total number of higher-ed students in Japan fell from 2.87million in 2005 to 2.83million last year. という文章があります。 この　higher-ed studentというのは　おそらく大学に行く生徒という意味だと思いますが、　higher-edという言葉を辞書でひいてもでてきません。 どなたか説明していただけますか(´＿｀。)

こんにちは！ 日本語で、１）初等教育、２）中等教育、３）高等教育 というと、１）小学校の教育、２）中学校・高等学校のの教育、３）大学教育のことです。これらは、それぞれ １）primary education、２）secondary education、３）higher education の翻訳語です。 　私もそうでしたが、higher education が「大学教育」というのが、最初はピンと来ませんでした。日本語の高等教育も、高等学校の教育かなと思っていました。 　ということで、higher-ed students は、higher-education students つまり、college students ないし、university students のことで、ご推察の通りです。 　以上、ご参考になれば幸いです！

こんにちは。 ニュース記事などでは、単語・構文両方において省略や簡略化が行われます。 この場合の　higher-edは、higher educated　の省略ですよね。higher education　が「高等教育」いう意味ですから、高等教育を受けた学生、つまりkochouran6さんが思った通り、大学等に進学した学生ということになります
