結論として，前置詞を前に出すときは the dictionar about which I told you のように which を使うしかありません。 しかし，これはかなりかたい表現であり， the dictionary (which/that) I told you about のように，about を後ろに残します。 そして，この場合，目的格の which/that を省略するのが もっとも用いられている表現です。 about を前に出すときは that も用いられませんし， 省略することもできません。

中学生の子供に関係代名詞について聞かれて少し困っております。 一般的には学校ではこのように教わると思います。 " This is the book. I bought it yesterday. 文頭にwhichを持ってきて itを消して1つの文につなげると、次のような文になります。 This is the book which I bought yesterday. " 子供はこの程度の文は読めるんですが、ここではwhichがboughtの目的語でありながら、bookを指しているという論理がいまいち掴めていないようです。どなたか、上手く説明できる人はおりますか？ 少々専門的になっても構いませんので、英語の参考書には書いていないような斬新な回答をお待ちしております。

もうすぐ期末テストなのですが、関係代名詞がよくわかりません・・・。 This is the desk that my father gave to me. という文章では This is the desk と、主語と述語が最初に来て、 my father gave to me と、修飾語が後ろに来ていますが、 The book that I bought yesterday was interesting. という文章では The book と、主語が最初で I bought yesterday の修飾語が真ん中、そして was interesting と述語が最後に来ています。 この違いはどうしてなんでしょうか？ 私の勘違いで変な質問だったらすみません。

あるpodcastのスクリプトです。 “That” refers back to something that you have already talked about or understand. It might not always be something specific, as in the example I gave of a specific house. Someone may say, “Well, I’m going to go to Harvard University,” and you say, “Well, it isn’t that good of a school.” The “that” refers to perhaps schools that are better even though you don’t have a specific school in mind. ちなみに、3行目の“in the example”とは、以下の文章を補足しておきます。 “That” in a sentence refers back to something previous in the conversation or something that both of the people who are talking understand. For example you might say, “You know the house that we saw last week over in Santa Monica? Well, my brother’s house is that big.” It’s the same size.
