文章の意味がわかりません。
ある大学入試の英文なのですが、 In the past century, the way we handled aloneness has changed dramatically. "Alone" did not always mean an absence of others. The word was coined in medieval times, and originally signified a completeness in one's singular being. 上の英文の最後の a completeness in one's singular being の解釈が分かりません。英語に詳しい方、お願いいたします。

現在の「alone」は「ひとりぼっち」のような意味ですね。2文目が示唆しているように、「他の人/物が【イナイ】こと」を意味します。ある意味で【消極的】な意味だったわけです。 しかし本来は(originally)、「単一の存在が完全で【アル】こと」という意味であり、「消極的」にではなく、【積極的】に定義されていたということです。 下線部訳の問題としては難しいと思います。また、私の日本語も不十分な気がします。 ただ、「解釈」としては、1文目で「aloneの意味」が劇的に変化したことを述べているわけですから、要するに「現代のaloneの意味」と「本来のaloneの意味」を対比させているということです。その点を踏まえて3つの文を読めば、理解できるのではないでしょうか。 【an absence】 of 《others》 ⇒ 【completeness】 in 《one's singular being》

孤独という言葉は現代人の疎外という概念を連想させますね。 英語ではsolitary(名詞はsolitude)、lonely(lonliness),alone（aloneness)などの言葉があります。寂しいという言葉ですが むしろsolitudeなどは、詩では孤独を楽しむのように使われます。 この英文の著者がいいたいことは本来aloneという言葉は昔は a completeness in one's singular being つまり一人の人間として自己完結的だという表現だったのであり 他者がいないということはまったく関係なかったということを いいたいのだと思います。寂しいとかひとりぼっちだとか そういう概念はまったく含まれていないと。 以下は余談です。 著者の文の背景には他人との関係を現代人は意識しすぎるようになったということを多分いいたいのでしょう。ライフスタイルという言葉が 典型的です。この言葉は他人からどう見られたいということです。 デビッド・リースマンの「孤独な群集」などをお読みになると面白いと 思います。

こんにちは！ a completeness in one's singular being 神学的、哲学的な意味合いでしょうかね。 それはともかく、著者の言うのは―― complete というのは、「完全な」ですね？同時に「全部そろった；完備した」という意味があります。ということは、この文脈では、「自分で全部そろっている」→「完全に自足している」／「自分が自分であることに何の不足もない」ということでしょう。円満具足ということ。 現代の、人とつながっていないと不安でやりきれないという、自分がincompleteな感じと対照させている言葉かと．．． singular は「独自の」、beingは、「存在」という名詞（辞書に独立項目として出ているはず）です。 ということで―― 自分の独自な存在の中で完全に自足していること（不安感を抱かずにすむこと／統一された自己感覚を持てること） を意味しています。大学入試としては、はっきりいって、良識のない問題だと思います。（思弁的すぎて、難しすぎます！）

「完全に単一の存在であること」のような意味でしょうか。 「前世紀に，aloneness に対する処し方が劇的に変化した（そして今にいたる）。alone は他者がいないということを必ずしも意味しなかった。alone という語は中世に作られたのだが，本来は，完全に単一の存在であることを意味していた」
