中野幾雄著「技術英語攻略法」 （株）工業調査会 発行 のp141で次の作文例と英文がありました。 「どんな機械・装置でも，摩擦をなくすことはできない。 しかし，多くの面で機械の作業効率は，その部品の摩擦の減少度合いに大きく左右される。」 これの英訳は； In any mechanical devices, it is impossible to eliminate friction. Nevertheless, in many respects, the working efficiency of the mechine depends on the degree to which the friction of the parts (are) lessened. *** 最後のareはisの誤記とおもいますが。 となっていました。 質問は； ”その部品の摩擦の減少度合いに”にあたる英文を the degree to which the friction of the parts is lessened. と表現されています。 私は，自分の英作では the degree of decrease in friction of the parts. ・・・としました。 Googleで"the degree of decrease in"と検索すると，結構ヒットしますが，続けて，"the degree of decrease in friction"とすると，まったくヒットしなくなります。 私のレベルではfrictionがinに続けてどうして書けないのかの理由が分かりません。 私の英語では間違いでしょうか？ ご説明をご教示お願いします。 また著者の表現”the degree to which the--”ではなく，”the degree of --”に書き換えるにはどうすれば良いでしょうか。 あわせてお願いします。

ご質問の要望とはずいぶんずれましたが、今回は別の書き方で。 技術英語としては「degree of ---」などが正確を期す書き方だ と思いますが。 (1) In any mechanical devices, it is impossible to eliminate friction. Nevertheless, in many respects, the working efficiency of the machine depends on how seriously the parts are worn by friction. wear → worn → worn 「摩耗する」 「摩耗する」には「gall」なんてありますが、これまで観たことも聞 いたこともないので、自己判断で却下。意味としては、「parts」はど れだけ酷く摩耗した(する)かに依存する。こんな風に書き換えてみま したが、こちらの方が少し読みやすいのかな(?)

和文英訳をするときには、日本語の本来の意味を理解する必要があります。 この日本文は、「摩擦をなくすことはできないが、摩擦を可能な限り減少させることによって機械の作業効率を高める」という意味ですので、私たちが摩擦を減少させるということを表す英文にする必要があります。ただし、技術文では主語を表さないのが慣例ですので例文のように受身形にする必要があります。このため、decrease in frictionにすると「単なる摩擦の減少」という意味になり、適切ではありません。

模範回答よりあなたの文のほうが自然に受け取れます。 Googleで"decrease in frinction"を検索すると14,700件ヒットしますから、大丈夫ではないですか。 (ご存じの通り検索するフレーズが長くなるほどヒット率は下ります） 辞書でも、decreaseの例文としてこんなのがあります。 Hunger decreases as one eats. The decrease in heat was ten degrees. Decrease the dose of medicine as you feel better.

decrease in ～ という表現は「～の数が減る」という意味ですので、decrease in population のように言えますが、物理量であるfrictionには使えません。 mabomkさんが言うように、この場合は decrease of なら使えます。 the degree of decrease of the friction 正しいですが、ofが繰り返すので良い表現じゃありませんね。 摩擦は、物質間に働く力であり、「摩耗」という現象とは違います。 ここでは、partsに働く摩擦力をどれだけ減らせるか（どれだけ滑りやすいか）という意味であり、どれだけ摩耗したか、といっているのではありませんので、お間違えなきよう。

質問いたします。 In the scene in which conference interpreters are given a 15-minute break, one of them says "we can grab a sandwich". 上の文で、"In the scene in which" ですが、分解すると "Conference interpreters are given a 15-minute break in the scene"と、もうひとつは"This is "が省略されていて "This is in the scene."になるのでしょうか？ 2つに分解した場合、どのようになるのかわかりません。 よろしくご教示ください。
