なぜ where なの？ （VOA Special English）

質問

最近、VOA Special English　で、結婚についての文章を読んでいます。
今日、残り半分を読んだので、質問します。

Different cultures have their own traditions. At African-American weddings, for example, there is "jumping the broom." This is an old tradition where couples jump over a broomstick laid on the ground.

この最後の文章についてです。
This is an old tradition 【where】 couples jump over a broomstick laid on the ground.
が、
This is an old tradition 【that】 couples jump over a broomstick laid on the ground.
だったら、「これは、夫婦が地面に置いたほうきの柄を飛び越えるという古い伝統である」
ではないかしら、と思ったのですが、
where というので混乱しました。どういうことなのでしょう。

Gです。　こんにちは。

このwhereの使い方はtradition, situation, condition, question, occasion等の単語が来て、次に来る文章がこれらの単語（伝統では、情況では、コンディションでは、質問では、場合には・では・においては）などの使い方である場合この「では」「には」「においては」のフィーリングを出すためにwhereと言う単語を使うのです。

逆の説明の仕方をすれば、couple jump over a broomstick (that is) laid in this traditionと言う文章を関係代名詞を使うとtradition in whichとなり関係副詞を使うとtradition whereと言う表現になる、と言う事なんです。

ここでは、where = in that[which] です。

これは旧来からの伝統であり、(その伝統においては) 夫婦が地面に置かれたほうきの柄を飛び越える

そういう意味を伝える文章です。
