これはbutにすべてがかかっています。 butには逆説の「しかし」だけでなく「～以外の、～をのぞいた」という意味があるのです。これは「しかし」と並ぶ重要な使い方です。 例えば、all but you ならば、あなた以外他全員という意味になします。 だからここではここではbutは「did nothing 」と「write the report 」をつないでいて、『レポートを書く以外、他はnothingをした』という直訳で、これはくだけばどういうことかと言えば、つまり、レポートをかく以外は何もしていない、という意味になるのです。 このようにひとつの単語をとってみてもたくさんの意味をもっているので、それを常に頭にいれていないと、このような疑問を繰り返してしまうことになります。がんばってください。

Butの使い方なんですが、例えば (1)Babies do nothing but cry.（赤ちゃんは泣いてばかりいるものだ。） (2)I had no choice but to quit my job.（私は仕事を辞めるしかなかった。） この２つの例文についてですが、(1)ではなぜbut の後ろに原形が来るのですか？ 前置詞ならcrying にするべきだと思ったのですが・・・ 同様に(2)ではなぜto不定詞をとるのでしょうか？ そもそもこの２つのbutの品詞すらわかりません。 回答お願いします

接続詞のbutは「～を除いて、～以外は」という意味がありますけど、何でbutの次は動詞の原形だったりto不定詞だったりするんですか？どっちが正しい用法なのですか？ Babies do nothing but cry. I had no choice but to quit my job.
