うーん・・・ちょっとno.1の方と訳が異なってますが、参考まで。 あとちょっと、「彼」の言ってる分、最初のところが意味が合わないんじゃないですか？therefore以下も前の文に繋がっているべきのような気が・・・。ま、変更せず直訳すると、 ■彼が言うには、「公立の学校からの出願者が（より）多いって言っているわけじゃないんです。だから、独立系の学校（出身者）のための定員を減らさなければなりません。でももし競争が激しくなると、誰かが席を失うことになります。失う席の数が多いほど、それを失う可能性も多いということです。」 でも、本当は、次のような構成の気がします。 He said: "It is not a case of saying that we must reduce places from independent schools due to having more applicants from state schools...(省略）" それだと、 ■彼が言うには、「公立の学校からの出願者が（より）多いから、独立系の学校（出身者）のための定員を減らさなければならないと言っているわけじゃないんです。でももし競争が激しくなると、誰かが席を失うことになります。失う（ことができる）席の数が多いほど、それを失う可能性も多いということです。」 要するに、公立と、独立系（日本でいう私立かな）に割り当てる定員数の話で、出願者が増えた場合に、最初に割り振ってる定員数が多い方がその影響を受けやすいということかな。 次の文の訳は、 ■オックスフォード唯一の女性のみのカレッジであるセントヒルダは、通常他のカレッジに比べて、かなり少ない出願状況です － 例えば、古典、生物、化学では２席の定員に対して１席分（の出願）です － しかしながら、大学側が、特に特定のカレッジを希望していない出願者を割り当てるので、そこから数を補っています。 こっちの訳はほぼ間違いないと思います。 どうでしょ。
