おそらく，ご質問者は後に，I will consider it とあるので，I did not say, "I will." だとおかしい，この would は仮定法の would で，直接話法でも，I did not say, "I would." となるのではないか，と思ったのではないでしょうか。 しかし，結論としては will です。 Mcallister は I will --- のところで，I will consider it. と言うつもりだったのを，（slowly だったので）Emsworth は I will のところで，I will. と発言が終わると早合点したわけです。Come back に対して，I will (come back). と言ってくれたと思ったのです。それに対して，I will. と帰ってくるのを承諾したわけではなく，I will consider it と言うつもりだったのだ，と言っているのです。

補足に気づきませんでした。 1800語レベルで90％読めるのなら，かなり力はついてきていると思います。100％というのはなかなか難しいと思いますので，stage6 にチャレンジするとか，一つ上のレベルのものを読んでいっていいと思います。 わからないところは，＞文法を調べる ということでもいいと思いますが，今回のご質問のような場合はなかなか，文法書では見つからないと思います（あえて言えば，「省略」という項目でしょうか）。やはり，学習辞書と呼ばれる英和辞典（ジーニアスやプログレッシブ）をどんどん活用することだと思います。 多読もいいですが，少し難しめのものをじっくり読むのもいいと思いますよ。また，読んでいてわからないところがあれば，ご質問してください。

#1です。 補足にお答えしますと，would で終わっていますので，would の後にあるべき原形動詞は以前に出ているものでなければなりません。あるいはすでに，後にあるべき原形動詞を省略した表現がなされているかです。そういう意味では，I would が表しているのは You will? や I will ---と同じものだとしか考えられません。実際には，このような推理をするのではなく，瞬時に判断していくようにしなければならないのですが。

お答えありがとうございました。 もう一つアドバイスいただけますか？ 最近「ロマンス・ノベルを情感たっぷりに読みたいな。」と思い、３冊ほど読みましたが、今の私の実力では無理だと感じました。 そこで、OXFORD BOOKWORMS LIBRARY を読んでいます。 これは、head wordが1800語に制限された本の一文です。このレベルの本だと90%くらいは特に考えることなく読めるのですが、今回のようにスラッと読めないところもあります。その時は文法を調べるようにしています。 今後、レベルアップするために効果的な学習方法をアドバイスお願いいたします。 OXFORD BOOKWORMS LIBRARY は、近所の図書館で借りる事ができ次のステージの本も15冊ほどありました。

参考書の中に以下の例文がありました。 正直は割に合わない、とまでは私は言いません。 I wouldn't go so far as to say that honesty does not pay. この文のwouldの解釈がうまく出来ません。 wouldではなくwillであれば、「言わないだろう」となるでしょうし、 さらにwill neverであれば「決して言わないだろう」となるかと思いますが、 wouldを使うと言うことであれば、仮定法的な意味を持つので、 「言わないだろうなぁ」と弱いニュアンスで使っているのでしょうか? あるいは「（仮の世界であっても）言わないだろう」と言う意味なのでしょうか? この文において、willを使ってくれていれば、すっきりと分かるのですが、 なぜwouldを使っているのかが分かりません。

確かにおっしゃるとおりです。 後で言い直しているのだから、何か違う事を言ったはずと思ったのですが、もしI would と言ったのだとしたら、どういう意味なのかしら？どうしても想像できませんでした。 それに対して、I will だったら納得できるのにと思いました。 でも、文法的には、間接話法ではどちらも考えられますよね? その場合、どちらか判断するのは、やはり文脈からでしょうか？
