'Dwayne the bathtub, I'm dwowning?'って？
先日のある英字新聞にあったコラムの一部です。 日本に２５年住んで初めて持ち家を手に入れようとして銀行でローンの申し込みをしようとする男性に銀行の支店長が言います。 "Mr. Dillon," the president began. "Is your middle name really and truly 'Dwayne?' " "Yes, it is." "Do you mean as in . . . 'Dwayne the bathtub, I'm dwowning?' " And then the bank erupted in riotous laughter （http://www.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/getarticle.pl5?fl20050312td.htm） このエピソード話が成り立つということは、英語話者にとっては”r” と“w”の音は非常に似通った音に感じ取られるということでしょうか？

megumegu1のご意見に賛同します！ 私も読んでみました。実体験にかなり脚色した話だと思います。 He grinned at me over clenched teeth and bloodless lips. "So . . ." He cleared his throat. "What IS your middle name?" 緊張しておかしなアクセントで質問しているように記述していて、その後の支店長の聞き間違い、発音のまずさを笑うという展開につながます。 さすがにネイティブにとってwとrの発音が似ているということはないでしょう。ただし両方ともかなり母音に近い響きの子音なので日本人にとっては聞き分けにくい音です。 その上、発音でも'Dwayne the bathtub, I'm dwowning?' Dwayne＝支店長が聞き間違えたdrainとして発音しているが、発音はDwaynに近い。 dwowning＝支店長の発音のまま（drowning） と聞き取りも発音も「日本人にとってはRの発音は難しいのね」ということだと思います。

Japan Timesの記事全体をざっと読んでみましたが（ちなみにこれって、記事全部がジョークですよね。本当の話だとはとてもおもえないんですけど・・・・。）。 多分、rとwの音の区別がつかないのは、英語話者ではなく日本人の方、ということではないでしょうか。文章から見て、この支店長って、日本人ですよね。で、Dwayneがちゃんと聞き取れなくてDrainと、とり、"「排水する」のDrainか？"と大笑いしたと。私はそのように理解したのですが。 英語話者にとってはrとwは似通ってないと思いますよ。 他の方々、どう思われます？

こんにちは。これは音が似ている言葉を掛けて、ジョークにしているものですね。”水を排出する”と言うのは”Drain”で、その人のDwayneと言う名前に響きが似てるので、笑いを取るタメに言った事ですね。

Dwayneの音ががdrainに「音が似ている」「響きが似てる」とご回答いただきました。 もう一歩つっこんで、 支店長の言葉を(1) 'Dwayne the bathtub’ さらに(2) ‘I'm dwowning?’ と表記してあるということは、 （１） 日本人と思しき行員と（または）支店長がこのコラムニストが口頭で伝えたDwayneのｗ音をｒ音と聞き間違え、 （２） さらにこの英語話者コラムニストには日本人と思しき支店長のdrownのr音がw音に聞こえた、 ということでしょうか？ とするなら、このエピソードは英語のｒ音とｗ音の「聞き取り」と「発音」の混乱・混同が日本人英語話者に見られる一例と見ることができますか？

That would mean that I eat vegetables and not meat, chicken, fish etc. In the context I used it in ("It's only cold in the mornings,") it would mean that it is cold in the morning, but it is not cold during the rest of the day. In a different context it could mean that it is always cold never hot, warm or cool in the morning. A clearer way to say what I meant that would have my intended meaning regardless of context would be "It is cold in the mornings only."

"knock-knock joke"のことは知っていましたがこのjokeは知りませんでした。 このjokeは、確かに「Dwayne」と「Drain」はネーティブにとっても発音が似ているということを支持していますね。 さらにこのjokeで"drowning"を"dwowning"としているということも考慮するとnativeにとって"r"音と"w"音の発音が似ているということでしょうね。 どうもありがとうございました。
