このcall は，「call A B(AをBと呼ぶ)」ではないと思います。うしろの全体（下の訳文のコンマの前）を1つの目的語としているように読めます。 はったり抜きで優位に見せる技術を，われわれは必要としている。

「いわゆる…」という意味で、「what we call/what is called」というのと、「so to speak/so to call it」というのと、「as it were」という構文があるのですが、使い分け方を教えて下さい。問題集には、 彼は外国語を学ぶことに関してはいわゆる天才だ。…as it were/so to speak 彼はいわゆる時の人だ。…what we call/what is called これはいわゆる逆効果というものだ。…what we call/what is called となっているのですが１つ目の何が違うのかわかりません。

so that 構文について質問させていただきます。 普通 I was so tired that I could not do that. というように使うかと思います。 しかし次の東大の問題の文章中のbut以下を見ていただけますか。 In the example I am thinking of the person who continues to behave in what most people would agree is a normal manner, but one so remort from his old self that he appears, to those who know him, to be someone else entirely. ここで私が引っ掛かるのは、but one so remort・・・ ではなくbut one is so remort・・・とすべきなのではということなのです。なぜbe動詞が不要なのでしょうか。 簡単にヒントでもかまいませんので教えていただけますでしょうか。

回答ありがとうございます。 安倍首相が要請して国会議員になった青山繫晴氏のような"見え見えのハッタリや知ったかぶり誇張"は使わないのですが、イギリス紳士のやり方はそれはそれで陰湿で胸糞が悪くなる卑劣なやり方です。しかし、青山氏のように単純なやり方ではないだけに、普通の人にはそれが見抜けないのです。 特にイギリス人以外の外人には見抜けず、イギリス人に劣等感を抱いてしまうとのことです。
