My husband and I are friends with a couple who never reciprocate lunch and dinner invites. We see them every week when they come over for “family lunch.” We cook and they bring a purchased dessert, which is all fine, but they never help with the cleaning up. the cleaning upはなぜtheが付いているのでしょうか?

 the cleaning upはなぜtheが付いているのでしょうか?

My husband has a frequent customer card for a local restaurant. Over time, he accumulated a credit of $40. We recently went to this restaurant with another couple. When the bill arrived, my husband took out his card and told the other couple they owed half of the bill, including the tip, and that he would apply his $40 credit to the remainder. apply his $40 credit to the remainderの意味をよろしくお願いします

  • made gestures

My husband and I are in our 30s and live on the East Coast. My entire extended family (15 people) lives in the Midwest. We see my aunts and uncles when we visit my parents twice a year. I talk to my parents, brother and grandmother on the phone regularly, but I would like to develop a closer relationship with one aunt and uncle, in particular. They don't have kids of their own. They're great role models and they've always made gestures toward me. They taught me how to cook and bake from scratch. made gesturesはどのような意味でしょうか?

  • in the months leading up

My husband and I socialize with another couple that we met at a meetup about a year and a half ago. Six months ago, the husband invited mine on a guys’ hiking weekend. In the six months leading up to it, it was discussed often and always as a guys-only weekend. On the car ride there, my husband found out that some men were bringing their wives. I am furious at the couple for lying to me. I wouldn’t have wanted to go, and I wouldn’t have been upset that my husband was going, but I do think it’s a huge lie considering we talked about it no less than 10 times in the months leading up. In the six months leading up to itは「ハイキングまでの6ヶ月の間に」でしょうか?あと、最後のin the months leading upの意味も教えてください。

  • play off

My husband and I have four young children. Generally, our children are well-behaved; however, sometimes they don't listen to me or my husband. It is incredibly frustrating for us, and we both lose our patience quickly with them. When this happens, we find that they start playing off one another and revolting against us. playing off one anotherはどのような意味でしょうか?

My husband and I are the youngest of our siblings, now all in our 50s with nearly grown children. Despite having the same opportunities, my husband and I are the only ones to have finished college, stayed married and kept the same jobs. As a result, we have a nice home, two cars and college tuition set aside for our kids, and can take family vacations. Our three siblings dropped out of college, racked up credit card debt, married and divorced multiple times, compromised their health with alcohol and tobacco abuse and left jobs as soon as the work became tiresome. They live in tenuous circumstances. We never judge or lecture. Lately, as the direness of their situation has pressed them into tough decisions, they keep bringing up how "lucky" my husband and I are to have all the security that we do, as if we didn't earn it or make sacrifices over many years to conserve our resources. While we are indeed blessed, luck had little to do with it. We've been disciplined. We have generously helped our siblings whenever the need arose, including college tuitions, car down payments, emergency veterinary bills and even funeral expenses. Now it seems they believe it was our duty, and with the holidays coming up, their comments are escalating. This is terribly hurtful. My husband is able to let this matter slide. But I need a civil response when our siblings accuse us of "owing" them because our circumstances are so much "luckier" than theirs. compromised their healthとtenuous circumstancesとlet this matter slideの意味を教えてください。

  • shattered his leg

I saw my boss kissing a man who is not her husband in an alley on my way home from work and saw the two of them going into a hotel the next week. She has a young kid and is married to a great guy. We live a couple of blocks away from them, and her husband and kid often bring us cookies they’ve made or invite us over for barbecues. When one of my own kids shattered his leg and I was away, my boss’s husband drove him to the hospital and waited by his bed for six hours until I could get there. shattered his legはどのような意味でしょうか?
