means(手段）という英単語の使い方

次の英文について教えてください。

Radio and TV are important as ( ) of spreading ideas.

空欄に入るのは、a meansとのことなのですが、冠詞aがなくても入りますか？

手段の意味のmeansは単複同形とのことなのと、主語であるラジオとテレビを１つの手段と考えずに、それぞれが考えを広める手段という解釈で、means ofとすることはできるのでしょうか。

meansは単複同形ということは不可算名詞ではありません。単数形の前には a を使うと考えてください。
radio, TV には the が必要です。are が使われているので、それぞれが独立した文にはなりません。

補足

theをつけるのは通例というだけなのでは？
辞書をひいてみたのですが。

質問者様のイメージは

A and B are means of xxxxxx ing ということですから　そのまま複数形との理解で問題ないと思います。

（何としても、絶対に）　というとき　by all means とか良く使います。（複数形の例）

の文に関しては、radio, TVといった放送メディアをひとくくりにすれば、as a means ofでよいと思います。これを、音声のみと映像と分けて説明するような文脈ですと逆に、as means ofとしたいと思います。

おっしゃるように，means は news とは異なって，
可算名詞であり，単複同形です。

means という単語に限らず，こういう複数主語で are 形 as ～「～として形だ」
という表現の場合，単数か複数か。

SVO の場合，SVC の場合にも悩むことがあります。

They have a car. と言った場合，
彼らでまとめて１つということもあれば，
それぞれ１つという配分単数というのもあります。

そういう意味でこういう単複はあいまいになるケースがあって，
かつ，どちらも用いられたりします。

今回のような as の場合，important というのはそれぞれについて，
１つの手段として重要だ，ということで配分単数的な a means の方が
自然なように思います。

欧米でこのas means of の使い方は皆無ではありません。辞書レベルではかなり探してみましたが見つけられませんでした。

以上のように、英語圏での新聞、雑誌、ニュース配信、百科事典などで用例がいくつもあります。少なくても２０００、おそらく数千はあるはずです。
（googleのようなゴミ情報とはちがう、ニュースソース専用の検索で調べた結果です）

以上のような用例があるのですが、次のようなことが言えます。

まず、as means of は少なからず用例がある。
as means of を単数で使っているような例もたくさんある。これは誤用だと言わざるを得ない。
as two means of . . . as different means of . . . なら単数はあり得ないので当然複数形になる。

ということで、結論は、辞書では用例がないか、ほとんどないのですが、多少これが許容され使われており、文法的に間違いとはいえないーーと思います。
