文法問題です。

The road led him ( ) what he knew to be the right direction. この空欄に入るのはinだそうですが、 lead him toへ導くだと思ったんですが、どうして違うのでしょうか？ in だとする根拠は何なのでしょう？

これ，文法問題で出しますか。 in (what he knew to be) the right dirction というふうに，in は what をクッションとしつつ， 結局，direction とつながります。 クッションというのは in の実際の目的語は what（の中に含まれる thing 的な意味） なわけですが，その what が関係節内で knew の目的語になり， さらに，know O to be C という構造から，O ＝ C となる。 結局，この what は C である direction と等しくなります。 だから，in (what he knew to be) the right dirction 「彼が正しい方向だと認識していたもの（ここでは方向と言ってもよい）」で というふうになって，lead O ＋方向という感じになっています。 direction には in です。 The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. というふうに，方角というのは360度の円を描いた中で ある角度を表すのであって，その場所から来たり，場所へ向かうわけではありません。 to the west だと「西部へ」であって，西の方角で，とは異なります。
