単純に答えると May I...? で聞いているということは許可を求めているので 答えは許可、不許可となります。 ですので不許可、禁止の must notが使われているのでしょう。 逆にcan not の場合は許可、不許可の次元よりももう少し緩いイメージで考えられてはいかがでしょう。 ただしこれはあくまで文法上のお話なので、 実際に英語を使う環境では ”使っていい？ー不許可です。” なんて場面はあまりありません。 ”can i smoke here? - no you must not” というような場面ならmust notが使われるかもしれませんね。 本当に使って欲しくない、また使えない場合は I'm sorry but you can't use it because... というような感じになるかと思います。 もちろん英語を文法として理解することも大切ですが、雰囲気、感覚で理解するのも大切です。 実際の場面なら質問者様の no you cant. でも充分会話は成り立ちますのでね。 頑張ってください。 ＊よければ参考にしてください。 http://sumo.sakura.ne.jp/auxi/auxi8.html

May I use your bike? の答えとして 1,No, you may not. 2,No, you must not. とどちらも言うことができるかと思いますが、 どちらも「使ってはいけません」でいいですよね？ mayは「かもしれない」という意味もあるので、１は避ける などの使い方はネイティブはするでしょうか？ また１，２のニュアンスの違いがありましたら教えてください。 よろしくお願いいたします。

助動詞について 本日も宜しくお願いします。 「They speak English」を、それぞれmustを使った文に書き換える問題です。 肯定文 「They must speak English」 否定文 「They must not speak English」 疑問文 「Must they speak English？」 Noでの返答 「No,they need not. / No,they don't have to.」 上の3つまでは、そのままmustを使うだけなので作り方は解ります。 一番下の返答の答えですが、何故must not＝have toで同じ意味なのでこれも解ります。 ただ、何故「need」を使う回答も正解になるのかが解りません。 「No, they must not.」にならないのでしょうか？ 会話重視ではなく、テストに向けての勉強です。 できるだけ噛み砕いて説明頂けると嬉しいです。 宜しくお願いします。

ebayでの支払いトラブルで困っています。 英語が全くできない私ですが、ebayで初めて落札しました。支払いはPAYPALで支払い、完了メールも来ました。 無事取引ができたと思っていたのですが、下記の文章がセラーの方から来ていて、翻訳機能を使っても内容が良く分からず困っています。PAYPALの支払い画面も未受領となっています。 どなたか詳しい方がいらっしゃったらおしえていただけないでしょうか。よろしくお願いします。 your payment with paypal can not be recived my me. 二つあります。 (1) You need not give it back to me. 上記の文の意味が分かりません。訳していただけると助かります。 (2)穴埋め問題です。 Do I have to visit Mr. Smith with you? No, you don't have to visit him with me. You ( ) not go out. 上記の( )内を need としたのですが、解答では must になっていました。 自分では両方あっているような気がするのですが、どう区別をつけたらいいのでしょう。 教えてください。

先日アメリカの人から You can use it with another word or words and the meaning is different と教わりました。 例えば Sorry 人の名前, I was busy. Sorry guys but I can not do it. Sorry my friend..but I was with my boss. 理由は Do not use the word "sorry" all times.... You must use it together with another word to avoid you looking weird. とこのとで、ありがちな、 Sorry （と言ってからおもむろに何か言う）について説明をしてくれました。 アメリカの人にはとてもとても変に聞こえていたんでしょうか？ 「the meaning is different」という部分がどういう事なのか気になるので、 詳しく教えてください。
