文頭に Observing ... , 文法と直訳

高校生で習う分詞構文です。 学校や塾で習うのは when ～, if ～, because ～などの接続詞の代わりになる， というものです。 ここでは and という接続詞の代わりに ing になって， 「～して，そして，～」と訳しています。 実際には Observing ～は， the doctor が observe ～しつつ，しながら， と asked という主たる動詞と observe が同時に進行しているイメージです。 この医師が，「何も異常はないと述べる」と医師としての所見を述べる中で， その発言中で同時に「～かどうか尋ねた」 もちろん，一息に話すわけではないので， 「～して，そして～」でぴったりなわけですが， 英語的には（一言でないにせよ）一回の発言の中で ２つの「所見・質問」が同時になされているのです。 （分詞構文自体初めてなのかもしれません。 学校でも塾でも分詞構文は習いますが，なかなかこういう実際のイメージで教わることはないと思います。）

英文法なんですが・・・ He asked me if I (was/were/had ever been/had gone) abroad. という問題で、was と had goneがダメな理由は「私に（電話ではなく面と向かって）聞いているから」ということで良いのでしょうか？ もしasked himならばwas や had gone もOKなのでしょうか？ あともう一つあるんですが The girl (drowns/will be drowned/should drown) if no one tries to help her. で仮定法じゃなくてただの条件というのは解るのですが、なぜshouldはだめなんでしょうか？drownの自動詞用法で「溺れ死ぬはずだ」ではおかしいのでしょうか？ 解る方居ましたらお願いします！！

It's possible I would have had to trade something for that knowledge." 試訳） 「奴に聞くべきだったな」 「聞いたからって正直に答えたかしらね」 「わからん。何かと交換しなきゃいけなかったかもな」 この「would have had to」は、文法用語では何というのでしょうか？ 未来完了形を過去にずらした用法だと思うので、過去未来完了形…？ でも検索しても英文法ではそういう言い回しはないようです。小説などできわめて頻出する用法ですが、文法的には何というのでしょうか？
