allow a foot
One should allow a foot when aiming at a man walking across at a hundred yards. 暗殺の計画の話しで、相手に猶予を与えるような喩えで言っているようなのですが、allow a foot の意味が解りません。あえて１フィート外すと言っているのでしょうか？よろしくアドバイスお願いします。

これは、allow A for Bの用法「BのためにAを見積もっておく、etc」の類似例でしょうね。 「100ヤード離れて歩いている奴を狙うなら、1フィートのずれを計算に入れておくべきだ」 ということでしょう。 おそらく、ライフルで狙撃ということなんでしょうけど、100ヤードを弾丸が飛ぶ間に狙った歩いている人間は1フィート進んでる、ということでしょうね。 だから、進行方向に1フィートずらしたポイントを狙い撃て、とそういう意図の台詞だと思われます。

allow には「余裕をみておく」という意味があります。 動く標的に対しては「一歩分」を頭に入れておかなければならない、ということ。

辞書類には、例えば（ウェブスターの場合）下記のような allow の意味があがっています。 to assign as a share or suitable amount (as of time or money) <allow an hour for lunch> この意味の延長上にあって １００ヤード向こうを歩いている男を撃つには、動いている１フィート先に狙いを付けるべきだ。 （言い換えれば標的其の物でなく、その移動する先１フィートを狙って、ちょうど的中する、という事ではないかと思います。合ってますかね）
