（１）think of ~って、普通に「～を考える」「考慮する」の意味もありますが、 この場合は、「思いつく」という意味だと思います。 「夏と聞いて、あなたは何を思いつく？」 と訳すのが正しいと思います。 （２）What do you think that when you hear "summer"? →これだと、think の目的語がthatとwhatのふたつになってしまい、意味不明です。 what do you think when you hear "summer"? →これだと、「あなたは夏と聞いてどう（何を）思う？」と、thinkの意味が広くなり、「（具体的に何か）思いつく」の意味合いは出ないので、文法上は正しいですが（１）の文とは意味が変わってくると思います。

今、一生懸命熟語を覚えているのですが、 ふと疑問に思った事がありました。 thinkとthink ofの違いなのですが、 たとえば、 What do you think of when you hear the word"Japan"? という文章と What do you think when you hear the word"Japan"? ではどう違うのでしょうか？ 両方とも「～のことを考える、思う」という意味だと思います。 他にもaskとask forなどです。 I asked your advice と I asked for your advice がそれほど違うように思えません。 この動詞+前置詞の場合と動詞のみの場合との 違いをお教えいただけますでしょうか？ よろしくおねがいします。

英文解釈の参考書に It is not a question of what you can do but of when you can do it. (君に何ができるかではなく、それができる時期が問題だ。) とありました。 私は、 It is a question of what you can do but of when you can do it. という英文を作ると、上述の和訳の意味になるような気がしてしまうのです。なぜ、最初に書いた英文が、その直後の和訳になるのでしょうか？
