a pupil を「彼」と置き換えた、 from whom → from him のことです。

He can no more swim than a hammer can. = He cannot swim any more than a hammer can. Sentences that sparkle cannot sprig from an empty person any more than milk can be poured from an empty bottle.

He continued: "My paintings are visible images which hide nothing; they evoke mystery and, indeed, when you see one of my picture, you ask yourself this simple question: What does that mean? It does not mean anything, because mystery means nothing either. It is something we cannot know. Art evokes the mystery without which the world would not exist." Art evokes the mystery without which the world would not exist.
