これは私の体験談で感覚的なお話ですので間違ってるかどうかいう ことではありませんが、以前Economicsの論文を提出したときに、 教授が私の使った表現を指摘して、論理的且つ客観的な内容を論文にするときは、 ジャーナルとかを書くのとは違うのでその文中で使うボキャブラリーにも それ相応のものを選ばなければいけない、といわれました。 私はその中で、（たしかhigh-velocity growthについて）3つのグラフの 推移について質問者様のような感じで比較し、even を比較級の強調で使ったら、 even は compattionate and subjective impression の現れだから客観的 に数字などの差異などを分析する場合には用いないほうがよい、とダメだしされました。 言われたときは一瞬理解不能で固まりましたが後で、あ、なるほど。と思いました。 が、それにしてもちょっとそこまで・・・、と思いましたしその教授も大学院に ずっといるジュ－イッシュのじいちゃんだったのでそんなこと普通の人が気にするとは 思えませんが、ご参考まで。

The thermal expansion coefficient of A is smaller than that of B, and that of C is even smaller. これでよいと思います。 ただ、「Aの○○係数は～」という日本語の表現・語順に必ずしもとらわれる必要はないので、 The thermal expansion coefficient is smaller for A than for B, and even smaller for C. とか A has smaller thermal expansion coefficient than B, and C has even smaller one. とか いろいろ考えて、一番すっきり分かりやすそうなのを選ばれたら良いと思います・

A is smaller than B, and C is even smaller. のような単純な表現の方が、分かりやすいと思います。 「弱い」なら、smallerのところをweakerに代えてください。

桐原書店から出ている即戦ゼミ３という文法問題集の問題で疑問に思ったことがあるので質問させてください。 文の誤りを訂正しなさい。The salary of a teacher is lower than a lawer. で、答えはthan a lawer→than that of a lawerなのですが、この他にもsalaryに対応してsmallerにしたほうがよいのでは？と思いました。 ご意見くださいませ。

以前、学校でthe one とthatの違いは、 前にでてきた単語と同一かどうか。全く同じならthat 違うのならthe oneということだったのですが Ｔhe population of Osaka is smaller than that of Tokyo (大阪の人口は東京の人口より少ない) この文、東京の人口と大阪の人口は違うはずなのに なぜtha oneをつかわないんでしょうか

単数名詞の繰り返しを避ける that of の of の中身が複数の場合、それに続く動詞は単数で受ければ良いのでしょうか？複数で受けるのでしょうか？ 例えば以下のような文の場合です。 The performance of A is high, but that of B and C <is/are> low. but 以下の文章を単独で書けば The performances of B and C are low. になろうかと思いますが、前の文章に出てくる The performance of A が単数なので、that of を those of にする訳にもいかないように思います。 宜しくお願いします。

回答ありがとうございます。 少し質問を変えさせて頂きたいのですが、 Aの熱膨張係数はBより小さい。 Cはそれよりも更に小さい。 という英訳だとどうでしょうか？ The thermal expansion coefficient of A is smaller than that of B, and that of C is even smaller. が適当でしょうか？
