pull up They pull up the driveway to an enormous and very beautiful house. このpull upって、道を上がった、の「上がった」でOKでしょうか？

すみません，door や house でなく，gate なので，普通に「車道」でよかったのかもしれません。 ついでに，確かに down ～でも「～に沿って」という意味があります。 down the street, down the road テニスで down the line というのもこの一種だと思います。 up, down は基本「上」「下」なのですが， 日本語で「北上」「上京」「野に下る」と同じように，地理的な高低とは必ずしも一致しません。 中心地や，話者の近くが up，遠く離れるのが down という場合も多く，come up to ～と言えば「～に近づく」です。 down に「沿って」の意味があるのは，話者の視線が遠くに離れていくイメージだと思います。 up で同じような意味になるのは，以前一度回答した記憶があるのですが，通って行った先に中心としてとらえるべき目的地があり，そこへ近づくというイメージではないでしょうか。

No5が補足します。うっかり他動詞と書きましたが、up は driveway に前置詞的に作用しています。drive up the hill などと言う場合と同じです。 辞書的には pull up だけだと up は副詞、pull up driveway だと up は前置詞だと思います。

普通、辞書には止まると書いてあります。馬の手綱を引いて止めるというイメージが説明されていたりもします。しかしここでは (driveway を目的語とする) 他動詞ですし単純に(自動詞的に考えて)止まるとすると変ですよね。 完全な同義語はないかもしれませんが、maneuver (roll/ bank/ nose up) のような意味です。 詳しく言うと driveway を引っ張り上げてから止めるというニュアンスです。実際には坂道ではなくても、玄関は道路よりも幾らかでも高い位置にあるというイメージも加味されて up を付けます。また "driveway to" と to が付いていますので、driveway に止めたのではなくて driveway を通って house (実際は玄関のイメージでしょう) の前に止めたという意味合いになっています。 pull up + driveway + to の３語を組み合わせるだけで乗り物の動きが巧みに描写出来ています。よく使う表現にしては辞書に丁寧に説明されていませんね。

直訳すると「車を駐車するためにドライヴウェイに入っていった」です。必ずしも「道を上がった」わけではありません。 「ドライヴウェイ」というのは、欧米の家によくあるもので、公道から車庫や玄関に通じている道のことです。「私道」と訳されることもありますが、日本の家屋でイメージする私道とは、なんとなく違います。

こんばんは。 えっと、文脈から判断ですが、家が高台にあるというような表現があれば 坂を登ってというように訳してもいいと思いますが。 ｐｕｌｌ　ｕｐ　に　ｓｔｒａｉｇｈｔ　ａｈｅａｄ　の意味がありますから、 道なりに進んだ　ともできるかと思います。 　＃もちろん直進でもいいですが　＾＾； カーブしていたら大変ですからね。　そのまま進むと・・・　という感じでしょうか。
