コンマを入れるとしたら何処？：Why ills you cannot fathom thwart the start of any life in you.
こんにちは、いつもお世話になります。 現在、ゲーテのファウストの現代英語訳（David Constantine訳)を読み始めています。 その中で、タイトル文を簡潔な文に書き換え、もしくはコンマを入れて区切りを分かりやすくしてみようとしてみました。スランプ気味なので合っているか添削していただけますか？ 背景：ファウストのセリフ。 自分がどれだけこの世の知識をためたか、またそれでも結局は満足が出来ないという心情を語っている一場面。（＊質問箇所は３，４行目のみ＝タイトル文） ～～～～上記の本より引用～～～～～～～～～ Are you still wonder why your heart In panic clenches tight in you? Why ills you cannot fathom thwart The start of any life in you? ～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～ 意味自体は始めの１，２行目は「お前は未だに何故己の内で心臓が恐怖の為にしめつけるのか思い巡らすのか？」そして、３，４行目は、「何故病は理解しがたく、いかなる人の生活も妨げるのか？」のような意味だとおもうのですが、 （１）３，４行目を簡潔な文に書き換えると、Why ills you cannot fathomの部分は強調の倒置が行われているからそれを戻すと、Why you cannot fathom ills又は、Why cannot you fathom ills なので、Why cannot you fathom ills which thwart the start of any life in you? に成るんですよね？ （２）そもそも、コンマさえふってあれば元の文でも分かりやすいと思い Why ills, you cannot fathom, thwart the start of any life in you? と考えてみましたが、合っているでしょうか？ 質問というよりも確認のつもりですが、最近スランプ気味で、、、。 よろしくお願い致します。

> （２）そもそも、コンマさえふってあれば元の文でも分かりやすいと思い > Why ills, you cannot fathom, thwart the start of any life in you? > と考えてみましたが、合っているでしょうか？ この部分は合っています。 ... が、 > Why ills you cannot fathomの部分は強調の倒置が行われているから ... ではありません。 もう少し分かり易い文に書き換えると、 "Why do ills which you cannot fathom thwart the start of any life in you?" ... です。 > Why cannot you fathom ills which thwart the start of any life in you? ... とは異なる意味です。 また、"ills" は "病" ではなく、"悪"です。 ファウストは悪魔に魂を売ってしまったことを後悔して自問している場面なので、"病" と訳すと意味が違ってきます。

大達人、締め切り後の御回答ありがとうございます。早く締め切り過ぎました、すいません。 ＞"Why do ills which you cannot fathom thwart the start of any life in you?" 確かにこうしないと意味的におかしくなりますね。これならば、「なぜ理解できぬ病が人の生の始まりを妨げるのか？」になりますが、僕の考えだと質問文で書いたような意味になってしまいますね、、、。 ＞また、"ills" は "病" ではなく、"悪"です。 この場面ではまだ、悪魔にも精霊にも会っていないので、おそらく病だと思います。 著作権が切れた森鴎外訳だと、 ～森鴎外訳、東京：富山房，大正２出版より引用～～～～～～ あらゆる生の発動を、なぜ分からぬ苦しみが 障害するのを、まだ不審がる気か。 ～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～ これから、魂をファウストは売るのだと思います。 doとwhichの場所は、本当に勉強になりました。 ありがとうございます。 一応、１０ポイントはまだ進呈していないので、管理者に連絡して、可能ならポイント発行したいです。 本当にありがとうございました。

any number of と multiple の違いについて 「複数の独立した領域を持つ画像を扱うために」を英語で表現するとき、 1. In order to handle an image with any number of isolated regions, と 2. In order to handle an image with multiple isolated regions, のニュアンス的な違いを教えてください。 そもそも1の文の様な「any number of」の使い方は正しいのでしょうか？ すみませんがよろしくお願いいたします。

友人から"You are the furthest thing in my life from a 'bother'."と言われたのですが、なぜ"in my life"がつくのか疑問に思っています。この場合、"in my life"がなくてもいいのではないでしょうか？付くと付かないでは、意味が違ってくるものなのでしょうか？ また、この文の言おうとしていることですが、「あなたは私の人生で邪魔ということからは最も遠いよ（「あなたは邪魔じゃないよ」という感じでしょうか？）」ということでいいでしょうか？ 疑問が多くて、お手数をお掛けしてしまいますが、どうぞよろしくお願い致します。

- "It is ～for you"と、"It is ～of you"との違いについて。
"It is nice for you to walk in the park"と"It is nice of you to walk in the park"という二つの文が違う意味を持つということは分かるのですが、後者の文について、"Of"というのは、意味上の主語というほかにどういう意味を持っているのでしょうか？ 直訳すると、「については」という意味になり、"nice of you"が、「あなたにとっては心地よい」という意味になると思うのです。（ちなみに前者は、"For you to walk in the park is nice"と書き換えられ、to walk in the park=niceとなり、「あなたが～することはすばらしい」となる） ということは、"It is nice about you to walk in the park"でも、文法的にＯＫということになると思うのですが。よろしくお願いします。
