こんにちわ。 「fms」という単位の略表記について教えて頂けますでしょうか。 使用されている場面としては、１８世紀末あたりの英国海軍による 太平洋航海で、船が錨を下ろすようなときに使われているようです。 英文は、1779年のキャプテンクックの第3航海の乗組員が書き残した 資料にあるもので、以下のように書かれています（下級乗組員の資料なので、そもそもの英文の質も疑わしいかもしれませんが・・・）。 「Anchored in 17fms black sand having towed and sailed in, amdist an Innumerable Number of Canoes, the people in which were singing and rejoicing all the way」 この、「１７ｆｍｓ」が、どのような単語の頭文字の略で、 日本ではどのような日本語に対応するのか、ご存知の方が いらっしゃいましたら、ご教授お願いできますでしょうか。 宜しくお願い致します。

fmsはfathomの略fmの複数形です。 『リーダーズ英和大辞典 第２版』によると fathom 尋(ひろ) 《主に水深の単位: =6 feet=1.83 m; 略 f., fm, fath.》.
