It is sufficient to know that the different kinds of signals that we assume to be the main carriers of information within the nervous system are essentially perturbations of the membrane potential (the so-called resting potential) of the nerve cells.

the nervous system are essentially small physical changes in a physical system of the membrane potential perturbation 1. A small change in a physical system, most often in a physical system at equilibrium that is disturbed from the outside.

This peak is generated by the rapid decay of the membrane potential, followed by a reversal of the potential for a short time, and by its return to the previous polarity within about a thousandth of a second. 「このピークは膜電位の急激な減衰によっておこる、続いて短い時間に電位が反転し、続いて前の正反対の電位に約1/1000秒以内に戻る。」 で、よろしいんでしょうか。 ご指導お願いします。

The interior of the cell is normally negative with respect to the outside. This potential collapses as soon as the cell dies, and is apparently due to an active separation of ions by the membrane.

The term spike refers to the shape of the peaks that are seen on the oscillograph records when the membrane potential is measured by a fine electrode placed in the vicinity, or in the interior of the neuron. (The more interpretable records of the membrane potential are obtained by means of one electrode inside the cell and one outside, which may be placed at some distance and is then called “indifferent electrode”.) この文章の和訳お願いします。

Other innovative technologies to be tested will include electrodialysis deionization, membrane distillation and low-temperature distillation, while the program also aims to explore the potential for cost reductions and improvements in the energy intensity and efficiency of established technologies such as reverse osmosis.

Predatory frog-eating bats discriminate among potential prey on the basis of their calls. Bats familiar with Bufo typhonius almost never approach a loud-speaker broadcasting the calls of a novel species from a different region, a species with a call whose energy is largely in the 2-kilohertz range, just like that of B.typhonius. The bats were more likely to approach a speaker playing the calls of two other novel species that have signals unlike that of B.typhonius.

This rectilinear ornament seems to have come from Central Europe with te Beaker Folk, and is in strong contrast to the spiral designs brought from the Mediterranean by the megalith builders. A combination of the two traditions is found on the strange little chalk cylinders from Yorkshine, one of which has a concentric horseshoepattern that resembles the round eyes and face of an owl. A few wooden figures of men, some of them four or five feet high and probably of the sixth century B C, have survived, but the art of the Bronze Age people was essentially abstract and ornamental, unlike the naturalistic painting and scuilp-ture of their remote ancestors, the Palaeolithic hunters.

"I don't think much of that," said the Duck, " as I cannot see what use it is to anyone. Now, if you could plough the fields like the ox, or draw a cart like the horse, or look after the sheep like the collie-dog, that would be something." "My good creature," cried the Rocket in a very haughty tone of voice, "I see that you belong to the lower orders. A person of position is never useful. We have certain accomplishments, and that is more than sufficient. I have no sympathy myself with industry of any kind, least of all with such industries as you seem to recommend. Indeed, I have always been of opinion that hard work is simply the refuge of people who have nothing whatever to do." "Well, well," said the Duck, who was of a very peaceable disposition, and never quarrelled with anyon, "everybody has different tastes. I hope, at any rate, that you are going to take up your residence here." "Oh dear no!" cried the Rocket . " I am merely a visitor, a distinguished visitor. The fact is that I find this place rather tedious. There is neither society here, nor solitude. In fact, it is essentially suburban. I shall probably go back to Court, for I know that I am destined to make a sensation in the world." "I had thoughts of entering public life once myself," remarked the Duck ; "there are so many things that need reforming. Indeed, I took the chair at a meeting some time ago, and we passed resolutions condemning everything that we did not like.

The task which sundry modern writers have imposed upon themselves is to prove, that the Mosaic narrative, however apparently at variance with our knowledge, is essentially, and in fact true, although never understood properly until modern science supplied the necessary commentary and explanation. Two modes of conciliation have been propounded which have enjoyed considerable popularity, and to these two we shall confine our attention. The first is that originally brought into vogue by Chalmers and adopted by the late Dr. Buckland in his Bridgewater Treatise, and which is probably still received by many as a sufficient solution of all difficulties. Dr. Buckland's treatment of the case may be taken as a fair specimen of the line of argument adopted, and it shall be given in his own words.

In February, instructions were issued from the divisional headquarters, covering communications, supply dumps, equipment, arms and ammunition to be carried by each soldier, the proportion of the attacking units to be left out of battle, medical arrangements, substitute commanders, liaison, wire-cutting and bombardment arrangements of SOS signals for artillery and machine-gun barrages, gas bombardment, smoke screens and measures to deal with stragglers and prisoners. The instructions went into great detail, stipulating that officers were to dress the same as their men, precautions were to be taken to stop machine-gun barrages falling on friendly troops, the positions of observers and the calculation of safety distances. Signals to open fire were a green very light, a red and white rocket, a yellow and black flag or Morse SOS by signal lamp, at which the machine-gunners were to fire for ten minutes.
