最初の文は、「鳥か飛行機か、いやスーパーマンだ」（古いですが） みたいな感じで、幽霊とも言われ幻とも言われているけど、 本当は黒い服を着た男がいるんだ という解釈だと思います。 ゆっくりコンマのところで間をとって読んでみると 雰囲気がわかるのではないでしょうか。 そして、オペラ座には、幽霊、怪人、いや、黒い服の男がいた。 彼は、頭がなく胴体だけ、あるいは胴体がなく頭だけなのだ。 黄色い顔をして、鼻はなく、目には黒い穴があるのみ。 最後の文は、black holes for eyes を直訳すると長くなるので 骸骨のように穴が開いていて眼球がないというおかしな状態を 伝えるのに、上記のような表現にしてみました。 実際鼻があるとか目がどうかっていう具体的なことではなく、 いかにきちんと周囲がファントムを認識できていないか、 いかに不思議 奇妙 異様な存在かが伝わればいいんだと思います。

body , bodiesの使い分けがよくわかりません たとえば (1)Taking a bath is a main part of Japanese society and its purpose is not restricted to cleaning bodies. (2)He has a strong body. なんですが(1)はbodyではだめなのでしょうか？ そもそもbodiesってbodyの複数形ですが、 体の複数形ってなんだよ？という感じでよくわかりません
