確かに倒置ですね。 本来述部をなしていた"has been / coupled with this"の主語"public discenchantment～of society"が 長くて、とにかく長くて後置されたものとみて良いでしょう。 動詞はhasとなっていますので、実質の主語はdisenchantmentのみですかね。 higher educationと、その教育のabilitiesに失望することが「このこと」と関連してきたのだと述べられています。 このように、thisは前文中にあると思われ、 its abilitiesは直前のhigher educationかなと思います。

よろしくお願いします。 長文の一部なのですが、下記の文の２のところの指示語がさしているものがよくわかりません。 よろしくお願いします。 １、They say that the most important part of the Englishman's character is perhaps his sense of huor. ２、What they mean by that it is very difficult to explain to anyone who is not English. ２は倒置文なのはわかっていて文の構造はOKです。 ２のWhat they mean by that のthey とthatのさしているものはなんですか？ それらが、それらによって意味することは・・・ この二つは同じ内容、つまり前文のthat節をさしているのでしょうか？ ひとつの文で同じ内容をさす指示語が二つもでてくることがあるのか？ と疑問です。 よろしくお願いします。

TOEFLを勉強しているのですが、(1)This chapter has many more exercises than does the next one.(2)The new phone system is able to hold far more messages than was the phone system that had previously been used.この二つの文章は、倒置が行われているかと思うのですが、強調によるものでしょうか？簡単な倒置は、主語と動詞（述語）が理解できるのですが、(1)と(2)を普通の文章にするとどのようになるのでしょうか？どこが本当の主語となり、述語はどこなのか考えれば考えるほど簡単な倒置もわからなくなってしまいます。

下の文 He has visited many English-speaking countries to find out for himself what he can do now to improvehis English ablity.という文で、find out のうしろが突然for himselfになっていて、目的語と思われるwhat he can do now to improve his English ablityが一番後ろに持ってきてありますが、目的語の倒置というのも可能なんですか？自分は今まで主語が長いため形式主語itで代用し、その長いのを一番後ろに持ってくるってのは何度も見たことがあるんですが目的語の倒置は見たことがありません。 どなたか詳しく倒置の原則を教えてください。宜しくお願い致します。

次の文になります。 Something has gone wrong with this microscope. go wrong withは、～（機械）の調子が悪くなるという意味で使われるようですが、いつもsomething has～という表現で使われるのですか？ 確かに(機械)を目的語に取れば主語は何にするか困りますが。
