stood ajar
よろしくお願いします。 ドアが半開きになっている状態を「stood ajar」と 言っているようですが、なぜこのような表現になるのでしょうか。 breathless she came to the door that stood ajar The large combination door stood ajar he verified that the church door stood ajar At the very end of the passage a door stood ajar （ 訳もいただければうれしいです。）

ajar は「半開きの状態で」という副詞です。 ドアやビルや山のように高く立ってるものは stand という表現をよく使いますね。 なので「半開きの状態でそこに立っている（そこにある）」ということだと思います。 stand still (じっと動かないでいた） stand behind (後ろにぴたっとついていた） などという表現も参考になるでしょうか。 breathless she came to the door that stood ajar （息をのんで、彼女は半開きのドアの方へ行った） breathless は形容詞なので、breathlessly ではないのでしょうか？？ The large combination door stood ajar （大きな連結ドア（兼用ドア？）は半開きであった） he verified that the church door stood ajar （彼は、教会のドアは半開きだったと証言した） At the very end of the passage a door stood ajar （通路（廊下）のずっと奥に半開きのドアがあった）

ajarという単語はそれだけで少し空いている、半開きになっているという形容詞・副詞です。 例文の全てが、stoodを伴っていますので、あきっぱなしになっている、というような状態を伴う意味合いだと思います。 breathless she came to the door that stood ajar 息をころして彼女は半開きになっているドアまで来た。 The large combination door stood ajar 半開きになっている大きなコンビネーションドア。 （コンビネーションドアとは気候などに合わせて使うようになっている網戸などを組み合わせて使うタイプのドアです） he verified that the church door stood ajar 彼は教会のドアが半開きな状態なのを確かめた。 At the very end of the passage a door stood ajar 小道の一番奥にあるドアは半開きの状態だった。
