以下のとおりお答えします。 ＞So we must meet ego with the hostility and contempt that it insidiously deploys against us—に関する質問です。 ＞このthatの用法が全くわからないです。「だから、我々は敵対と軽蔑の心をもって自我に向き合わなけばなりません。？？？自我は、陰険に我々に対して機能している。」 文法的にどのようにthat を理解すれば良いのか解説宜しくお願いします。 ⇒まず、このthatは名詞節を導く接続詞です。そして、名詞句（the hostility and contempt）と名詞節（that it insidiously deploys against us）とが同格関係をなしています。基本的に「～するという〇〇」と訳せます。 ということで、この部分の訳は、「だから、我々は、エゴというものは己に対して陰湿に展開するものであるという敵意や軽蔑心をもって、それ（エゴ）に立ち向かわなければならない」となります。 ちなみに、画面全体の原文と訳文はこうなります。 Today, we will be unable to improve, unable to learn, unable to earn the respect of others if we think we’re already perfect, a genius admired for and wide. In this sense, ego and self-deception are the enemies of the things we wish to have because we delude ourselves into believing that we already possess them. Our pursuits should be aimed at progress, however little that it's possible for us to make. however little that it's possible for us to makeの文法が分からないです。 Howeverの用法は、[接続詞的に][however＋形/副＋主語＋動]だと思いますが、ここでは、 little の後にthatがあります。 it's possible for us to makeの表現の中に何か他の単語が入るように思えないです。なので、塊として理解しているのですが、そうなると、thatが分からないです。 これは、make little となっていて、little が形容詞や副詞の性質と代名詞の性質を兼ね備えている、その名詞的性質から関係代名詞のthat が使われている、もしくは、 however little (*progress is) *that it's possible for us to make という解釈なのかわからないです。 解説宜しくお願いします。

ドラマの台詞で And as lawyers, we must all come to respect that. というのがあるのですが、 we must respect that. との違いというか、all come to の必要性 文法的なものがよくわかりません。 どなたか説明をお願いしてもいいでしょうか？ よろしくお願いいたします。

ずっと秘密を持っていた人が、ついにその秘密を話してくれることになりました。 それを聞いて、相手の人（秘密を教えてもらう人）がこう言ったのです。 "We should all pool whatever information we have, so that we ask the appropriate questions." 文法書を調べると、「, so that」なので「結果のso that」ということになり、訳は「どんなものであれ知っている情報を全部共有するので、適切な質問をする」ということになると思います。 でも、それだと日本語が少しおかしい気がします。 「目的のso that」として訳すとしても、so thatのあとに助動詞がないので、文法的に違う気がします。「適切な質問をするために、どんなものでも情報を共有すべきだ」となって、なんとなく意味はとおりそうなのですが、いまいちしっくり来ません。 どなたかお力をお貸しください。よろしくお願いします。

「英語リスニングのお医者さん」という本のスクリプトと和訳に We've been working so hard to meet the deadline. He's got to give us more time. (締め切りに間に合わせるためにがんばったわ。 彼がもう少し時間をくれればいいのに。) というものがありました。私の英文法の知識によれば、上記英文は願望を表さないのです。ところが、和訳は「いいのに。」という願望になっています。これはどうしてでしょうか？
