＞computerはなぜcomputersとならないのでしょうか？ ⇒同文中のnewspaperもそうですが、「（ラジオやTVでなくて）コンピューター／新聞」というように、いわゆる《類別》を示す場合は通常単数形を使います。 これに対し、コンピューターの《全体や機種》などが念頭にある場合はふつう複数形になります。He is good at handling computers.「彼はコンピューターを扱うのが得意だ」。 名詞の数区分は、単純そうに見えて、「どちらかに決められないとか、どちらでもよさそう」といった感じで、混乱することがよくありますね。 別の例では、例えば、shoulderは通常複数形で使いますが、《首や胴体の続きと考えたり、人を表す換喩として用いたりする場合》は単数形にするのが普通です。look back over one's shoulder「振り向く」、shoulder to shoulder「肩を寄せ合って、密集して、協力して」。 とはいえ、以上のような使い分けが絶対というわけではなく、多分に主観的で、個人差もあります。これは一重に、現実の英語表現では、名詞は必ず《単数か複数かに分けて、そのどちらかを使わなければならない》という宿命が背負っている問題、と言えるでしょう。（通常、名詞の数区分をしない我々日本人にとっては、「そんなことは考えてもみなかった」というような、驚きと意外感がありますね。）

ご返事ありがとうございます。 つい昨日は，自分の質問の欠陥さえ自覚できない低学力の質問者がいましたが（笑），あなたはとても熱心な方ですから自説を追記しておきましょう。もちろん，東洋人のおっさんの勝手な思考ですから，ぜんぜん信用なりません（笑）。 この質問を見たとき，こう考えました。 1．単純ミスで the とか 複数形のs を落としたんじゃないか？ 2．それでも computer のキーワードさえありゃ通じるわな。electric brain と書こうが，semiconductor machine と書こうが，通じる。 3a．もし computer が間違いでないとしたら。後ろを参照すると，筆者は「ネット環境をふくめたシステム」と認識したんじゃないか。同様に，newspaper も朝日新聞などの物体ではなく，「紙媒体による出版システム」の意図で書いたんじゃないか。 3b．もしかすると，computer utilization などの意図で書いたのか？ utilization をタイプするのは面倒だから略した。

この場合単数で使われているだけでなく冠詞もついていないですよね。名詞で動作も想定する場合冠詞はつけないのですがこの場合も「コンピューター機器」を言うよりは「コンピューターを使うこと」と言う意味で使っているからでしょう。 go to schoolやsick in bed などと同じです。

Weblio 辞書には下記の例文があります。 ーーーーーーーーーー引用 I'm not familiar with computers either. 私はパソコンにも慣れていないです。 He is familiar with computers. 彼はコンピューターに詳しい。 ーーーーーーーーーーーー 私も「作文しろ」と言われたら，sをつけるでしょうね。
