ご指摘のようにaを付けることが多いですが、付けなくてもよいようです。 辞書を調べますと、次の例文がありました。 He is both a scholar and (a) poet. 「学者であると同時に詩人でもある」 『新英和大辞典 』研究社 不定冠詞のaの部分を (a) としているのは、aを付けてもよいし、付けなくてもよい・・・ということを表します。 参考になりましたら。

くだらない質問ではございますがお願いいたします。 The Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey is an American multi-mission, military, tiltrotor aircraft with both a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL), and short takeoff and landing (STOL) capability. 上記、オスプレイに関する記述です。 aircraft with both a vertical takeoff and landing 意味としては、垂直での離着陸が可能な飛行機って事かと思いますが、 "both"と" a"が並べて使われる文って初めて見ました。 両方の・・・ひとつの・・・ よく分かりません。 だいたい冠詞のa は a pen とか名詞につくという知識しか ないですが、takeoff やlanding なんて冠詞つくものでしょうか。

分数、倍数表現をするときの不定冠詞 a の使い方がわかりません。解説をお願いします。 参考書に載っていた例文です。 (1) This building is a(one) quarter as tall as that one. (2) This building is one and a half times as tall as that one. (3) This building is half as tall as that one. (1)の４分の１、(2)の１．５倍の場合は、aが付き、(3)の半分（２分の１）の場合は、aが付かないのはなぜなのでしょうか？ 半分（２分の１）は２つの内の１つと言うことであり、例文(1)、(2)と同様に不定冠詞のaが必要ではないのでしょうか？ 解説をよろしくお願いします。

（１）定冠詞 the の付いた二つの名詞をまとめるとき、 the を最初につけるだけでも良いでしょか？ たとえば、自分の買った orange と apple が話題になっているとき、 I bought the orange and apple. と言って良いでしょうか。 apples にも the がついていることになりますか。 （２）不定冠詞 a のときはどうでしょうか？ orange と apple を1個ずつ買ったとき I bought an orange and apple. と言って良いでしょうか。 あるいは apple にも an を付けないとダメですか？ （３）上記の（２）で不定冠詞 a が一つだけで良いときですが、もし an orange and apple を主語として文章を作ったときは、当然ながら An orange and apple are .... とするのでしょうね？

下記は、ICHのGuideline for Good Clinical Practiceの一部です。4.9.3でAny change or correction to a CRFのCRF（Case Report Form:症例報告書）の冠詞が不定冠詞です。特に限定されていないからということで不定冠詞になっているのでしょうか。 辞書の例文は、corrections to the textなどと定冠詞になっていて気になりました。 4.9.2 Data reported on the CRF, that are derived from source documents, should be consistent with the source documents or the discrepancies should be explained. 4.9.3 Any change or correction to a CRF should be dated, initialed, and explained (if necessary) and should not obscure the original entry (i.e. an audit trail should be maintained); this applies to both written and electronic changes or corrections (see 5.18.4 (n)).
