テキストがこう言ってます ↓ go to bed は英語ではあくまで「ベッドに向かって移動する」という１回 の動作を指す。「寝る」という状態を指すのではない。 When I was arrived home, my son had been in bed for more than two hours. は良いが When I was arrived home, my son had gone to bed for more than two hours. は不自然。 以下の例を見ても分かる。 I have gone to that high school for 3 years now, and the graduation is tomorrow. と、いうわけですが、↑この文は、不自然な文の例のようです。 日本語で言う「継続して学校に通っていた」意味ではなく、 不自然なのですよね。 でも、どういうのが自然なのでしょうか。 例文がありましたらご教授ください。

面白いご質問ですね。 日本語では寝るという言葉は動作も状態も表すことが出来ますが、英語では動作と状態は多くの場合峻別されます。 go はベッドに向かう「動作」を表します。 He had gone to bed by nine o'clock last night. He went to bed at nine o'clock last night. は正しい英語です。 しかし「ベッドで眠っている」という「状態」を表すには go ではなく be を用いねばなりません。 He had been in bed for more than two hours. の been in bed はベッドで眠っている状態を表す表現です。 一方で学校に通うという習慣的動作は普通は I have been in that school for xxx years と言います。be in は状態を表します。 I have gone to that school for xxx years I have been to that school for xxx years は間違いです。gone は「他所に行って今はここにはいない」意味なので不自然に感じるのです (例：He has gone to New York.) 。been to は「行ったことがある」意味になってしまいます (例：He has been to New York.)。 注：理屈っぽく考えれば gone to bed は「ベッドに行って今はここにいない」ということですが、これは別段不自然とは感じませんよね。 注：When I was arrived home, ではなく When I arrived home, ですね。

アメリカ育ち、NY在住のものです。 厳密には、以下の例文がすでにおかしいです。 > When I was arrived home, my son had been in bed for more > than two hours. ナチュラルで一般的な文とすれば When I arrived home (when I got homeのほうがさらに一般的です）, my son was already in bed. 「帰った時」というあるひとつの時点に、かたや数時間ねつづけている、という文のコンビネーションは日本語で考えてもおかしいです。 「帰った時には」 または 「私が帰った時点までに」 という風にすれば、my sonの節を完了形で表せます。 By the time I got home, my son had been sleeping for few fours. また学校の話ですが こういうのはどうでしょうか。 I have attended that school for 3 years and the graduation is tomorrow. 私なら上記のように言うか、または After going to that school for 3 years, I'm going to graduate tomorrow! など。 実際のシーンでは、もっとくだけた言い方になっていると思いますが・・。 （ちなみに、went も have gone も、実際には使われます。）

go は「離れる」、come は「近づく」がこの両者の基本的な意味です。そして『離れて行った瞬間』、『近づいて来た瞬間』に動作が完了してしまいうので、go, come という動作を継続することは不可能なのです。 二番目との例文が不自然なのは、「就寝」という瞬間的に完了する動作に for more than two hours という継続を表す語句が続くからです。 三番目が不自然なのも同じ理由です。go という動作と for 3 years のつながりが誤りなのです。 be には「…に継続して留まる」の意味がありますので、継続を表す語句との相性がいいのです。

私はどうもこの手の問題に弱いようで、 (1)My father was ill in bed for two months when the doctor was sent for. だと解答はMy father had been ill in bed for two months when the doctor was sent for. のみだけど、設問には一部だけを直せとは書いていないので、二か所直して、 My father has been ill in bed for two months since the doctor was sent for. もあるやん！と思って、答えられなくなります。まずはこれ合ってますか？ 合ってたら、ふつうは一部直すだけがルールですか？ やっぱ慣れなんでしょうか、、、、困った。そんなとこまで経験している時間が正直ない気がしてます、、、、。
