英文和訳の質問です。どうしても解らないので教えて！
He is not so old that he cannot climb the mountain. (1).彼は十分な年にはなっていないので、その山に登ることができない。 (2).彼はそんなに年ではないのでその山に登ることができる。 (3).彼は若すぎてその山に登ることができない。 so that構文の問題です。私は(1)にマークしましたが正解は(2)でした。 どう考えてもなぜ(2)なのか理解できません。英語に強い方どうぞご教示下さい。

＃１です。 お礼を見ての追記です。 "I am so tired that I cannnot walk anymore." もあくまでも直訳は "これ以上歩けないほど、疲れている」 です。 so that 構文をどのように理解するかはともかくとして（個人的には、覚える必要の無い構文だと思います。あくまでも主節はthatの前です。）、 否定文は、原則として動詞を否定するもので例文で言えば、"is"を否定します。 従って、肯定文に直すと、 "He is so old that he cannot climb the mountain." 「彼は歳を取っているので、山に登ることができない。」 です。 これを否定すると、 「（彼は歳を取っているので、山に登ることができない）ことはない。」 になります。 従って、「彼は歳を取っていないので、山に登ることができる。」になります。 逆に質問者さんの理解のような英文は、 "He is so not old that he cannot climb the mountain." になりますが、まあ、不自然ですね・・・・・通常は "He is not old enough that he cannot climb the mountain." ですね。「彼は十分に歳を取っていないので、山に登れない。」 （もちろん、oldの対語のyoungを使えば"so young"で済む話ですが・・・・・）

直訳すると「彼はその山に登れないほど老いすぎてはいない」です。 He is not(so old that he cannot climb the mountain) is not は()括弧内を否定してます。 正確には、He is not が否定してるのはso old ですが、 so oldの内容は「歳の取り過ぎ」で、 どれくらい歳取ってるかは「山に登れないくらい歳取ってる」ということです。 これの否定ですから、 「歳取ってる→そんな歳取ってない」つまり「山に登れない歳→山に登れる歳」 というわけで、 (2).彼はそんなに歳ではないのでその山に登ることができる。 ではないでしょうか。 説明下手ですいません。that は同格だと思います。

これを日本語に直訳すると、 「彼はその山に登れないほど年寄りではない。」 です。 従って、意訳すれば(2)になります。

He is 形容詞 enough to 不定詞. のように、同じ形容詞、不定詞を使って、しかも、so ～ that に書き換えることができる例文があったら、教えてください。よろしくお願いいたいたします。

so that 構文について質問させていただきます。 普通 I was so tired that I could not do that. というように使うかと思います。 しかし次の東大の問題の文章中のbut以下を見ていただけますか。 In the example I am thinking of the person who continues to behave in what most people would agree is a normal manner, but one so remort from his old self that he appears, to those who know him, to be someone else entirely. ここで私が引っ掛かるのは、but one so remort・・・ ではなくbut one is so remort・・・とすべきなのではということなのです。なぜbe動詞が不要なのでしょうか。 簡単にヒントでもかまいませんので教えていただけますでしょうか。

回答有難うございます。自分はso that構文を、 I am so tired that I cannnot walk anymore. =私は大変疲れているのでもう歩くことが出来ない。 のように、 ～なので…出来ない、と解釈しています。 すると問題文は”彼はそんなに年とっていないので、 その山に登れない”という訳に思えるのです。 これはso that構文にあてはめて考えるべき文ではないのでしょうか。
