アイルランドと呼ばれる独立した島の北に位置する、北アイルランドは、政治的には英国の一部で、その南側のアイルランドと呼ばれる国とは別である。 *** 関係代名詞の which is at the top ... は、継続用法で、補足説明的な部分ですが、制限用法の様な訳し方をしました。

England,Scotland,Ireland,Wales,Britain,Great Britain, the United Kingdom-why are there so many names for one small country? This is very confusing, and so it is worth spending some time getting the facts clear. The officisl name of the country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. This name is too long for everyday purposes and is usually abbreviated to the UK. The UK is made up of four countries(not regions),which are,in decreasing order of size:England,Scotland,Wales and Northern ireland. Great Britain is actually the name of the main island containing England,Scotland and Wales. The most common way, however,to refer to the whole country is Britain. This is not the official name, but most people use it because it is short and convenient. England,Scotland,Irelandand Wales all developed as separate kingdoms with their own languages and customs. As England became more powerful,it wanted to extend its control over the three Celtic kingdoms. It conquered Wales(1282) and Ireland(1652) and became politically united with Scotland(1707). But Scotland,Wales and Ireland never lost their status as separate countries. In the early 20th century, Ireland became an independent country known as the Irish Republic(or Eire,in the Irish language). Six counties in the northeastern corner, however, remained part of Britain, and are known as Northern Ireland.

教科書の英文の訳はこれでよろしいですか。 Northern Ireland has two faces. On the one hand, Northern Ireland is one of the most beautiful parts of Europe. Ireland has the nickname “the Emerald Isle”. This is because Ireland is such a green isle or island that it is like the green jewel called the emerald. The countryside of Northern Ireland has gently rolling hills. Everywhere there are small white farmhouses, and these farms produce rich milk, butter and cheese which are famous in Europe.

“Radar is not affected by rain, fog, dust, smoke or even bright sunlight, which can be a problem for video-based detection systems at tunnel portals” Although video-based incident detection is a big trend in the ITS industry,it is not the only solution capable of achieving good results in this field, and the adoption of radar-based systems is testament of this. Often proven in equally challenging surveillance applications in the industrial and security sectors, radar is fast becoming an indispensable component of ITS. Navtech Rader is a UK organization capitalizing on this movement. Dr Stephen Clark, the company's co-founder and director of incident detection systems, explains how the company became involved in the traffic market:"Our background is in industrial automation, but a while ago we moved into the security market with a wide-area surveillance system. This received a lot of interest from customers wanting to detect traffic flow, stopped vehicles, pedestrians, debris on the road, and so on.The first traffic project we did was a trial on the M4 motorway for the Highways Agency(HA).We subsequently worked on a number of motorways conducting trials that were a mixture of incident detection across the whole carriageway and hard shoulder monitoring for managed motorways” At the end of 2008,the HA requested that Navtech demonstrate the abilities of its solution in a tunnel environment.A trial in Southwick Tunnel using two radars has now led the HA to order six ClearWay radar systems in each tunnel bore for the new Hindhead thnnel on the A3 in Surrey.
