"最も最近の集計によれば、３１００万人の移民がアメリカに住んでいる。" ～によって, ～によれば という前置詞です。By the most recent count が文末に来てもいいのですが、先頭でも構わないですし、その方が分かりやすいからだと思います。

単純に「～によって」「～によると」です。 by count「数えてみると」 by my count「私の計算では」 by the first count「最初の計算によれば」

高校の英語教員です。不定詞の形容詞的用法の同格用法についてお願いします。 (1)形容詞的用法のうち、関係副詞関係の用法についてですが、私の勘なのですが、 場所に関する場合、 the house to live in とinが必要な場合と、the place to live と前置詞不要の場合の違いは、関係副詞が省略できる場合[つまり関係副詞thatが使える場合]ではないかという気がします。 the place (that) I live. → the place to live the house (which) I live in → the house to live in. ×the house to live 私の考えは正しいでしょうか。 また、それ[=前置詞の要不要]に関して明言している書籍があればご紹介お願いします。 (2)同格用法について 基本的に 動詞+to不定詞 be 形容詞 to の名詞形は同格用法ができると考えていますが、それ以外に何かあったら教えてください。 (3)慣用的に前置詞を省略するもの the money to buy it は知っています。そのほかに何が考えられるか、また、それに関して述べている書籍等があればご紹介ください。 以上３点、どれでも構いませんのでご教示ください。よろしくお願いします。

先日英語の正誤問題問題を解いていると下記の問題に出会しました。 英文に誤りがあれば適切な表現に直しなさい。 The castle stands by a beautiful lake. 解答をみると、byが誤りでbyをfacingに書き換えるのが正解でした。 ここでお聞きしたいのですが、なぜbyではダメなのでしょうか。byには「～のそばに」という意味があったと記憶しております。「美しい湖のそばに」で何となく問題ないように感じました。 この点につきまして、お手数 かけますが、ご教授頂けないでしょうか。私の貧弱な英語力では理解できないでいます＞＜ どうぞ宜しくお願い致します。

Feynman, a Nobel Prize winner in physics, made an epoch-making speech, the title of which was “There’s Plenty of Room at the Bottom.” In his speech, Feynman speculated on the possibility of exploring the world that exists “down at the bottom,” i.e., the world of atoms and molecules. He cautioned that he was not talking about miniaturization of, say, electric motors that are the size of the nail on your little finger, but rather a “staggeringly small world that is below.” He further predicted that in the future we would be able to make machines as small as molecules.
