最初の as は前置詞（或いは、もしかしたら接続詞）で、次の when は、先行詞を含んだ 関係副詞でしょう。だから、先行詞を含まない形での関係副詞 when で書き直せば、 >.......as the time when you wait for an expected call that doesn't come..... >as the time when you keep ringing a number that is always engaged. ってことでしょう。「（例えば）～～のような時」という意味です。

↓の文を訳しているのですが、よくわからない所があります。 A cigarette is the only consumer product which when used as directed kills its consumer. whenからdirectedまでを( )にいれて 「its consumerを殺すconsumer product」となるまではわかるのですが、 when used as directedがよくわかりません。 whenとusedの間にit isかなにかが省略されているとは思うのですが、後ろのasとdirectedは何なのでしょうか？ 説明していただければ幸いです。

when I say I am not going to the party,it is not so much that I don't like the people as that I don't have the time の訳が 私がパーティーに行かないというのは、そのひと達が嫌いというわけではなく、時間が無いからです。 と書いてあったのですが、このときの「when」の語法は何に分類されるのでしょうか？ ・・・ 以下考えた推測です ・「～というのは」と書いてあるので「理由」だと思ったのですが、辞書を引いてみると I am not going to the party when it is not so much that I don't like the peaople as that I don't have the time のように後半にwhenがつくような気がします。 ・whenを「～場合は」と解釈してみたのですが、それだと「私がパーティーに行かない場合は、(いつでも)そのひと達が嫌いというわけではなく、時間が無いからです。」となってしまいおかしい気がします。 塾や学校の先生に質問してみたのですが、「それはそういうものなんだよ」と言われすっきりしません。よろしくお願いします。

回答いただきありがとうございます。 つまり、when you wait for...「～という時に」とすると限定的で、as when you wait for...とした方が「～というような時」と、ちょっと意味がぼけて広い範囲を指す、ということですね。
