この女性語の「ever」を男言葉に変えると？：shop-girl, who looked ever so much older.
こんいちは、いつもお世話になります。 現在ヴァージニア・ウルフの、Mrs Dalloway in Bond Street.を読んでいます。 その中でこんな文がありました。 ～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～ 'With pearl buttons,' said the shop-girl, who looked ever so much older. ～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～ 「真珠のボタンの」兎に角ふけてみえる、売り子の娘が言った。 という意味なのだと思いますが、ジーニアスによると、everの「兎に角」という言い方は女性語だそうです。 男言葉に変えるとどうなるでしょうか？ 'With pearl buttons,' said the shop-girl, who looked in any case so much older. もしくは、in any caseの部分をanywayに変えるだけで、男言葉になりますか？ 教えてください、よろしくお願い致します。

全く分からなかったので、主人に聞いてみました。 Men can use "ever" to describe things as well. Usually, this tone seems a bit quaint. For example: "He tapped her on the shoulder ever so lightly to get her attention." The correct term is "ever so" which simply means that what ever follows this phrase is described to be of a high degree of whatever it is. Does that make sense? I'm not sure. I'm pretty tired... Also you ask if there is a more masculine way to say this. As this saying is quaint, it is easy to see it as more feminine as it describes "very" in a more round-about, passive way. You could use "very", "extremely", "monstrously", "terribly", etc. to make it sound more masculine. 'With pearl buttons,' said the shop-girl, who looked horribly much older. Not very nice, but a bit more masculine. …ということでしたので、bakanskyさんの仰る通りですね。 流石です。＾＾

お示しの英文を見た限りでは、私には "ever so much" の ever は very のような「強調」ではないかと思いました。 訳文の「兎に角ふけてみえる」というのが、不思議な日本語に思えます。 「兎に角ふけてみえる」というのは、いかなる状態なのか。 「老けて見える」のとどう異なるのか。 あるいは単に「老けている」ということを強調しているに過ぎぬのではあるまいか、とそんな風に考えました。 辞書（「スーパー・アンカー英和」第2版）の ever の項を見ると、"ever so" の見出しがあり、「 [副] （主に英） 非常に、ひどく (very)」と出ておりました。 Dictionary.com [ever] の項には、"Without cessation; continually" として、下記の例文が出ておりました。 You spend ever so much money in entertaining your equals and betters. --Thackeray. → http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/ever しかしこれも、「絶え間なく金を使う」 → 「湯水のごとく浪費する」 と解釈すれば、やはり「強調」と理解してもよさそうに思えます。 さらに検索しますと、J. ask for trouble と cause trouble の2つはどちらも 「やっかいな事を引き起こす」といった意味だと思いますが、 前者は「そんな事をしているとそのうち悪いことが起きるよ」みたいな感じで、 結局トラブルの種になった人に悪い結果が返ってくるという意味があるのかなと思いました。 どう違うのでしょうか？ そして Any girl who calls up a boy is just asking for trouble. これは end up in trouble と置き換えられるのでしょうか？ Any girl who calls up a boy ends up in trouble.？？ この2点について教えてください。

I keep falling in love with people who don’t want me. Or, to be clear, people who can’t. Friends with girlfriends, friends’ brothers who I see in passing, acquaintances who have moved to Europe. (1)彼は難なく彼女の家を見つけた。He ( )( )( )( ) her house. という( )に適語を入れる問題で、 He found with out any problems her house. が間違いになっていましたが、何がいけないのかよく分かりません。 He found her house with out any problems. なら文章的にはOKでしょうか？ なぜOKだと思うのかは自分でもわかっていませんが…。 （ちなみに正解はHe had no trouble finding her house.となっています。） (2)その女の子は私を見上げてほほえんだ。 という単語の問題の並び替えで、正解が The girl looked up at me and smiled. となっていましたが The girl lookd up and smiled at me. ではいけない理由もよく分かりません。
