midway through the period と、during a period of time. ニュアンスの違いを教えてください。
こんにちは、いつもお世話になります。 現在留学中の者です。 教科書を読んでいて、「その期間」という言い回しに、during a period of time.はよく見かけるのですが、今日偶然、midway through the periodという言い回しを見かけました。 グーグルで検索をかけてみると、midway through the periodは、スポーツ関係の記事に多く見かけました。 midway through the periodの方が、during a period of time.よりも、短い期間で使われるのでしょうか？ また、もしかしたら、midway through the periodを、「その期間」と勝手に思い込んでいますが、もし私の勘違いならば、その事もご指摘願います。 以上です、よろしくお願い致します。

一切の強力な根拠はありませんが、 during a period of time = その期間中の「何時でも」(時期は特定しない、出来ない) midway through the period = その期間中の「途中で」「中途で」 例えば、こんな例題があったとします、 (A) The festival had some days of unexpectedly poor turnout during a period of time. その祭典の'期間中'期待に反して人出が少ない日があった。 (B) The festival had some days of unexpectedly poor turnout midway during the period. その祭典の期間の中途で期待に反して人出が少ない時期があった。 (A)の場合開催直後なのか、中途なのか、終盤に差し掛かってなのかは(故意にか、どうかは別にして)はっきりしません、していません。 (B)この場合は、やはり「前半、後半の」間の「中盤に差し掛かって」の雰囲気を感じますが。 これはやはり「midway」=「その途中で、その中途で」の雰囲気を出したいと感じる書き方のせいでしょう。 こんな「中途」「半端」なお答えでご納得は頂けないでしょうが(泣)(笑)

"Midway through the period"はおっしゃる通り、スポーツ関連に使うフレーズというイメージがあります。それも全てのスポーツではなく、アイスホッケーとかプレーイング・タイムをperiodで区切るスポーツに使われることが殆どだと思います。 ちなみに、ＮＢＡはプレイング・タイムをquarterで区切るので、"midway through the quarter ..."、野球はイニングで区切るので、"midway thorugh the inning ..."って表現をします。 尚、学校の授業を1st period（一時間目）、2nd period（二時間目）・・・と表示するので、その場合も、"midway through the period ..."と言ってもおかしくないでしょう。 During a period of timeは、もっと一般的な内容に使われると思います。

ご回答ありがとうございます。 色々と調べて見た結果、私の疫学の講師が、During a period of timeと、midway through the periodの区別がつかない変わった人だったという事が、今日判明して、問題は無事解決しました。 講師が、「その期間」についての説明をしているのに、「その期間の中盤」と言っているので、正直、大混乱しました。 「その期間」と「その期間の中盤」ではかなり意味が違うと思うのですが…、あの講師は一体・・・。 回答者様も現在又は、元留学生のようですが、講師の英文法はどうでしょうか？ 私は、今回始めて、『とんでもネイテブ英文法』に出会いました。 閑話休題。 私は、あんまりスポーツ誌を読まない方なので、midway thorugh the inningも、midway through the quarterも大発見でした。 ありがとうございます。 ご多忙の中ご回答ありがとうございます。

I've almost doubled the amount of time that i can go on a tank of gas in my truck. といった英文です。 この文の前は、自分のトラックについて、あるオイル添加剤を使ったら燃費がよくなったっとの事なんです。同じような事を違った言い回しで述べてると思うのですがどういった意味になるのでしょうか？

その後の報告を致します。 この様な質問をするに至ったのも、講師（もちろんネイテブ）がどうも、「その期間」とiいう意味で、midway through the periodを使っていたので、正直？？？な気持ちで質問したのです。 回答者様がおっしゃる通り、midway through the periodは、「その期間の中盤」を意味している筈ですよね！ いくら、ネイテブでも、文法間違いはすると言っても・・・・大学の講師が、・・・、間違えるとは・・・、ちょっと予想外でした。 回答者様は、私の大学の、疫学の講師（ネイテブ）よりも英文法がしっかりしていると、断言できます・・・。 お騒がせいたしました。 また、ご回答ありがとうございます。
